Long before we had even went to Oaxaca I always felt our design style was inspired by the colors and liveliness of Mexico design. I’ve always loved colorful hacienda homes from the unique historic homes of San Miguel De Allende and throughout all of Mexico to the colorful buildings and the 500 year old architecture . Before William and I were married I had never really even considered Mexico for travel much less to live . But over the years as I saw so many of my favorite content creators traveling to Mexico I knew we needed to go back to Williams home country and explore more and we chose Oaxaca . Oaxaca is a unique city full of life , color and always eventful . Dia Los Muertos down there is a must do experience and to see kids and families at parks at 9/10 pm is not something I’m used to . To watch the old ladies in my community walk together in the evenings and talk , to actually know our neighbors and to always see everyone with a smile . We truly cannot wait to go back and our next goal is to purchase a home in Mexico. I cannot wait to bring color back into our next home and to finish our bus as well . This home was the last place we had truly settled into . The last few years we have moved a lot searching for a place that felt like home while also getting to travel and work in different cities and countries . by @lacasaveras

UPDATED SKOOLIE TOUR!

Guys it’ll be 5 years end of September since we bought this bus can you freaking believe it 🤣. It’s been a hard process especially when you’re doing it around a full time job and with a toddler . We bought the bus for $3,500 and did all the mechanical work first before diving into the redo of the inside . We wanted to make sure if we were going to put in 25k into the interior that the bus would be dependable for us to drive and live in on the road .

After a long break, we’re finally back working on our dream skoolie. 🚍

This is Part 1 of 2, where we start building one of the hardest-working pieces inside the bus: a multifunction banquette.

Every inch matters in a tiny home, so this build is designed to do more than just provide seating. Over the next three parts, we’ll take you through the design, woodworking, and final installation.

If you’re into skoolie conversions, DIY woodworking, van life, tiny home design, and custom builds, you’re in the right place.

What feature do you think this banquette will hide? 👀

Follow along as we transform a retired school bus into our family’s dream home on wheels. taken in Oaxaca City by @lacasaveras

Design Principle 01 — Less, but better.

The most memorable spaces rarely have the most things.

They have the right things.

Every material, every piece of furniture, and every object should have a reason to be there—whether it’s to serve a function, create balance, or add warmth.

Design isn’t about filling a room.

It’s about creating space for people to feel at ease.

This is the first of a series exploring the principles that guide our work at La Casa Vera Designs—timeless ideas that shape spaces with intention, not trends.

What design principle should we explore next?

✨ A design refresh isn’t always about starting over. Sometimes it’s about seeing the potential that already exists.

These before & afters are proof that you don’t always need to gut a home to create a dramatic transformation.

For this project, we focused on enhancing what was already there and making intentional design decisions that completely changed how the home feels for guests.

Instead of expensive structural renovations, we invested where it mattered most:

• Creating inviting gathering spaces outdoors
• Adding amenities guests actually search for (hello, hot tub 🔥)
• Defining separate outdoor “rooms” for dining, relaxing, and entertaining
• Layering warm lighting to create ambiance day and night
• Choosing furnishings that photograph beautifully online
• Refreshing interiors with rich color, thoughtful furniture layouts, textiles, artwork, and décor
• Turning empty rooms into experiences guests remember

Every decision was made with one goal:

To make someone stop scrolling and click on this listing.

Because great design doesn’t just make a home prettier—it makes it more desirable.

It helps guests picture themselves there.
It creates memorable experiences.
It encourages better reviews.
It often leads to stronger booking performance and can support premium nightly rates when paired with good hospitality, photography, and pricing.

The best part?

This transformation wasn’t about changing everything.

It was about changing the right things.

✨ That’s the power of a thoughtful design refresh.

If you’re wondering whether your home or Airbnb has untapped potential, we’d love to help you uncover it.

What looks effortless is never accidental.

Behind every memorable stay is a process of refining, styling, adjusting, and paying attention to the details most people never notice.

At La Casa Vera Stays, we believe the spaces guests remember are the ones designed with intention—from the first impression to the smallest detail.

✨ BEFORE → AFTER ✨

This attic bonus room started as a completely blank space with great potential but no personality. We transformed it into a cozy retreat that doubles as a lounge and sleeping space for guests.

By color drenching the room in a rich moody green, layering in warm wood tones, vintage-inspired textiles, custom window treatments, and flexible sleeping arrangements, we created a space that feels both elevated and inviting.

One of my favorite transformations to date. 🤎

What was once an empty room is now a destination within the home.

What a Sunday looks like at El Llano park in Oaxaca , Mexico . Contrary to what might think people in Mexico are out and about most days spending time with loved ones and family . Parks here are eventful with constant dance classes , kids playing and rollerblading , often times playing music , eating food from a street cart or getting cozied up on a bench with their partners .

Okay but THIS is why design matters for short term rentals 👀✨

Same cabin.
Same layout.
Same fireplace.

But one feels like an outdated rental… and the other feels like the cozy cabin everyone immediately saves to their Airbnb wishlist.

And no — you don’t always need a massive renovation to get there 👏

We focused on:
• warmer styling
• better furniture flow
• moodier tones
• layered textures
• statement art + decor
• making the space actually FEEL inviting

Because guests book with emotion first.
The photos are what sell the experience.

If your Airbnb isn’t performing the way you want, it’s usually not just pricing…
It’s the lack of space planning , good design and comfortable looking spaces .

A few months ago we had the pleasure of doing a cabin “redesign “ for a client’s cabin in Ellijay, Georgia . One of the spaces we had the most fun with redesigning on a budget was the kitchen .

We replaced the backsplash , removed the upper cabinets and replaced them with floating shelves .
The countertops were micro-cemented and the island was stained black . We also replaced the hardware and dated light fixtures and lastly put in new furniture .

Props to our clients who did much of the manual labor themselves with the help of our guidance 💕

Swipe to see the before photos 😅
