FAST-MOVING BRYSON FIRE FORCES EVACUATIONS IN MALIBU AS SANTA ANA WINDS FUEL FLAMES
[10/15/26 - Malibu, CA]
A fast-moving brush fire erupted in the Santa Monica Mountains Thursday afternoon, prompting mandatory evacuations as powerful Santa Ana winds and dangerously dry conditions fueled the flames.

At approximately 4:41 p.m., @lacountyfd responded to reports of a 1/2 acre vegetation fire near Encinal Canyon Road, in the vicinity of Camp Kilpatrick.

The blaze, dubbed the Bryson Fire, rapidly spread through dense vegetation and steep mountainous terrain, growing from just a few acres to approximately 100 acres in less than two hours.

Firefighters launched an aggressive ground and aerial attack, utilizing helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and numerous engine companies in an effort to slow the fire’s progression and protect nearby communities.

As flames continued to spread, evacuation orders were issued for portions of the Encinal Canyon area, with additional evacuation warnings extending into surrounding Malibu neighborhoods.

Strong offshore winds, high temperatures, and critically low humidity created challenging conditions for firefighters battling the blaze, with Red Flag Warnings remaining in effect across much of Southern California.

10/16/26 UPDATE

As of Friday morning, the Bryson Fire has burned approximately 147 acres and is 17% contained.

More than 400 emergency personnel have been assigned to the incident, with crews continuing to strengthen containment lines.

Officials report no structures have been damaged or destroyed.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. by @lacofireairops
