Yesterday marked the 5 year anniversary since my breast cancer diagnosis. It’s a day I wasn’t sure I’d get to celebrate when my life changed on June 24th, 2019. In some ways it’s meaningful, a milestone to commemorate and a day I’ll always remember, for better or for worse. But I also know that the long reach of cancer doesn’t play by any rules and time doesn’t protect me from going down this dark road again. All I can do is keep living these days of mine the same way I have been since that life-changing day 5 years ago; With intention and gratitude, with a healthy mix of fear and faith, with some hardwon perspective and a sense of humor, with a lot of hope and with so much love for the ones who have helped me along the way. Through it all, there have been hard days of loss, grief and anger...but so many good and wonderful days too, and I’m grateful for it all.

And to the ones who I’ve met here, whether you’re newly diagnosed, looking for a virtual shoulder to lean on, or a fellow patient down in the trenches with me, this space has given me so much purpose over the last 5 years and helped me more than I could ever express. I set out to share my experience in the hopes it would help others, but I came out the biggest winner ❤️✨💫 by @ladulcivida

It’s been awhile since I got on here and beat my drum for you. So in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a complicated period of time I both look forward to and dread, I’m here to remind you about what a big deal it is to take care of your body, especially your boobs.

I was 33 years old, healthy and totally confused when I found a lump on my chest. I didn’t find my lump doing a self check and I didn’t find my lump at the doctors office. I found it while I was folding a basket of toddler T-shirts and watching Bravo. I found my lump because I had an itch on my chest and scratching that itch changed my life. My lump turned out to be triple negative breast cancer (the most aggressive and deadly) and without regular self checks and yearly mammograms, the chances of me finding it early enough to make a difference were pretty slim. The truth is, I got lucky, but there are other versions of this story where I’m not so lucky, and I’m not here 2.5 years later telling you all about it.

So do me a favor, in honor of this weird month, in honor of me, in honor of thinking life is pretty nice and it would be lovely to see your kids grow up, or take a really cool vacation, schedule your annual, schedule a mammogram, do a self check in the shower or before you get dressed in the morning. Not to be a drama queen, but it’s a matter of life and death, and as someone who’s been through it, the life part is way better 💗 by @ladulcivida

Have a son. Whiteknuckle your way through the early, foggy days. Wait for the love to come. It will. Feed all 9 pounds of that little baby with your body. Watch him grow. Hand him to his Father and your mother and your friends, but keep him with you always. Feel his sticky little hands and hear his tiny voice - words that only you will understand. Sing to him and rock him til you think your arms will give out. Hold your breath and tip toe out of the room. Now he can walk. Now he can run. Take him to your favorite city. Take him to the beach. Take him to his first day of school and hang his drawings on the fridge. Read out loud. Teach your son to cook. How to bake a cake. Which peach is ripe. Take him shopping with you, bring him to museums to look at art you love and ask him to pick out the bouquet. Play Joni Mitchell and ask him which shoes he likes better with your outfit. Prepare him for a world where appreciating and enjoying beauty are not tied to his gender. Show him what it means to be good company. Let him make mistakes and show him how to mend fences. Light the path, let him walk ahead...hope he remembers the way home. 10 years of mothering my sweet boy - what luck! I always expected the love, but I never imagined the fun. Happy 10 years of you, Charley, the absolute love of my life. by @ladulcivida

Seven years ago today I was diagnosed with breast cancer. At 33, I was happy and healthy. So many parts of my life were going right...until it all started going wrong. My world stopped that day and for a long time, I wasn’t sure if it would ever feel like mine again. Some days, it feels like it never happened - the distance between who I am now and who I was then has made it feel much lighter. But this date always feels like a weighty one - a day to remember and reflect. Maybe not a day to reclaim (I’m too superstitious for that), but seven years later, a day I can hold differently than I did before. It’s lighter, still something I carry. It doesn’t weigh less...but I’ve gotten better at finding a way to hold it 🦋 by @ladulcivida
