I’m trying to give it a go

Extra✅: I had to give this September @monthly.wizard.challenge an enter at the last minute.
@gubi_cubillos is one of my all time fav skaters. I watched in awe of her slalom skills from years ago, she always has such an edgy style to her skating, it’s unique only to her. Since she took on wizard skating her skills are amazing. The last bit of the sequence, I struggled with connecting after one and a half rotations on one foot, I was lost but I can do it, well kinda…

I’ve been grappling with the notion of really letting go of the idea of oneself in order to move into the next phase. There’s an abandoning of oneself and everything that ensues and I’ve decided to really dig in and stay the course.

Falling is part of the game, it’s more about lowering yourself to the ground especially with those parallel stops and cracks on the pavement. (I do wear motorcycle crash gear under my clothes, so not to worry. We highly recommend it for urban-skating)

Extra✅: we handed out some fliers of the real CMcG from his arrest file. A high court jury in Ireland charged him with rape and vicious assault against Nikita Hand in 2018. There have been nine other women accusers that have been dragged through the wringer to bring light to this monster and he has made their life miserable too.
So why is he still on the main stage?

We are not letting people forget the real boy, a toxic reject with violence as his weapon, thinly veiled as athleticism. We say NO.

Support for him shows how the world really feels about women and victims of sexual assault. #enough

Nerd Extra✅: I took a little time to toss around and really marveled at the diverse capability of my two legs.
I read a cool thing athlete, skater Danny Aldridge thought. He said, it’s less important than most people think, to be able to do the same thing perfectly on two feet. For example, you might be able to hockey-stop on a dime with your right side but your powerslide is on the left only. Or you have a favored transition side. A “stronger” side.
But stronger while grasping for perfection will quash style development, I say. Style and strengths too, develop in the other foot when allowed. I often find myself falling into the mental trap of “should” and we stilt an experiment before it even happens. last night we got to listen to the music of the Messthetics with James Brandon Lewis live at the @sodabarsd. The Messthetics, a trio outta DC, contain a very interesting rhythm duo. Brendan Canty (drums) and Joe Lally (bass) played in Fugazi, keeping incredible rhythm in a frenetic, intense structure. Now, along with Anthony Pirog’s guitar and James sax, their music commands a room with unfettered energy. Other worldly experience!

two years have passed since we saw them play last and in that time I took lessons from Joe Lally, to improve on bass and to learn music theory. Anyone that has seen him play will say, “that’s how I want to play bass”, because it is truly amazing. Learning theory is fucking hard but Joe never let me quit and well, I just have to keep practicing and playing.

We got to shoot the shit with Brendan after the show and he remembered the concert in Dublin with chumbawumba that Fugazi played in 1992. I had to plough fields, take a train, then a bus and lie to my father to get to that show, to see musicians of that caliber. I felt music in my soul and needed it to survive, then and now.

So genuinely cool and chill are Brendan and Joe.

Thank you so much Joe for teaching us how to communicate the language of music, being a cool human and letting us pick your brain.

Nerd Extra✅: attempting these one footy rotations is beginning to iron out. There’s all kinds of things going on and you have but three seconds to think and do all of it.
A weightlessness plus shifting of weight to compensate for all kinds of forces of push and pull. It’s amazing and understandable why it befuddles us and takes a while to learn. I relish this time rather than fight it in frustration and I hope you do too.
I have been using @mago.pablo breakdowns of upper body rotation and using the arms and shoulders to make the switch. Very helpful plus his style is art in motion.

Extra✅: using a practice technique of “exhausting the pivot”, a little gem the great Naomi Grigg gave to us. So, the aim is to complete a pivot all the way through and here I am now on one foot doing just that. We have come a long way.
International Women’s Day, I can’t lie, it’s especially difficult this year. So many badass women in the world, and a bunch of fools make decisions that lead to destruction, war and pain. Women in our world today, yesterday and everyday walk around with more robes than men, more mental weight, more dismiss, ridiculous expectations and high possibilities of assault.
And yet with that, we rise above.

Extra✅: out here skating my best life and keeping an eye on our community park. Some recent sightings of strangers dressed in military garb, of staging areas etc around here and the MTS station . And c’mon, honestly, by shining a searchlight in my face, they gave their identity away, as no other department in San Diego does that and I spend a lot of time out on my skates in public, even on the train.

I am so appreciative of my skates and my body and a strong will to get out there and be in our community, to see the diversity in people and the daily grind of good people. The beautiful richness that every little facet brings. Let’s continue to get out of our insulated lives and get uncomfortable because believe me, we can outsmart that dullness.
