Brasil and Hip-Hop have been two currents running through my life for as long as I can remember. They’ve shaped how I listen, how I think about memory, and how I understand home.

So being named a 2026–2027 Nasir Jones Hip-Hop Fellow at the W.E.B. Du Bois Research Institute at Harvard feels especially meaningful to me.

Sounding Black Brazil begins with something I’ve been thinking about for a long time… what does rhythm carry across water, time, and generations? What changes as it moves, and what somehow remains?

Those questions are personal, too. They lead me back to what I’ve inherited, what I’m still uncovering, and what has yet to reveal itself.

I’m going into this fellowship without needing to know exactly where it will take me. I want to listen, to follow the connections as they emerge, and to let the people and stories I encounter complicate what I think I know.

Maybe that’s part of what I’m searching for…not a neat answer, but a deeper sense of relation. Between sound and memory. Between histories. Between where we come from and who we’re still becoming.

I’m curious to see what I find.

So I’m listening. 🇧🇷🖤 taken in Harvard University, Boston, Massachusetts by @ladybugmecca

I’m a little under the
weather,
but never out of orbit. ✨

Packing my cosmos into
carry-ons,
trading sniffles for serendipity.

My body pleads for
repose but my soul is
already in motion.

A constellation of cities,
your faces and perhaps
some chaos awaits.

See you somewhere in the
magic.

Until soon,
Mári 🖤

Love is the radical act of seeing ourselves and others not as we wish them to be, but as they are…whole, wounded, becoming. It is the daily practice of truth-telling, care, and accountability. In a world that teaches domination, to love is to resist. To love well is to free. taken in Los Angeles, California by @ladybugmecca
