POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
If you find yourself in the Hudson, NY vicinity on this Friday, September 11th at 8pm at Half Moon Bar, 48 Front Street, I’ll be a part of this lineup with Aron (@polyphonicworkshop) who’ll be creating a live soundscape as a I read, warble, feel. I’ll be reflecting on notions, experiences, ideas of / on mothering.

Thanks Norman (@nomandoesless) for the return invitation.

On Being a 2026 Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture Participant, yes, that happened.

And I’m closer to 43 than 42. And I’m glad I did it now and not back when.

Yes, it’s a place to party to play to pine to pursue but it’s not just for the youths—for the elders in the room, it has/had the potential to open us up to even more at very different junctures of our lives. It’s also a place for the lifelong learners and adventure seekers and the ones who still let their inner children out to play. It’s also a place for study for process for practice for contemplation for connection of time time time time of loon songs of questioning of deep thoughts of you want it you make it, of “why not?”, of even deeper feelings and of trees, oh so many many many glorious, wonderous mighty trees who have seen and heard it all.

I came in the hopes of having a better understanding of my practice, to be in my practice, truly, for the first time in my adult life and as a part of that exploration,
I embarked on studio visits with my peers. I ultimately visited 32 out of the 60. And I am changed for that experience. As an artist, as an arts worker, to be let into the inner worlds and minds of such brilliant, poignant, open, curious and brave artists at so many distinctive stages, phases, transitions, moments of their creative journeys and personal lives was a privilege. We don’t have a choice. This is a way of life, of being and I’m grateful to know that scattered out across the world are these truth tellers and seekers…

It was, it is, it will be.

I’m forever changed, how ‘bout you?

And I’m just saying, in general, with this life, y’all, it’s not too late, you’re not too old, you’re not too green, now is the time. Make the leap of faith about, for, whatever.

“Dedicated to my friends and former colleagues at institutions that won’t be named, here. Affirmations to you, from the Otherside.”

An excerpt from “deserve” performed on the occasion of May Day 2026 at Half Moon Bar in Hudson, NY.

The piece was inspired by the reflection of bell hooks in Sisters of the Yam: Black Women and Self-Recovery:

“Again, we are only able to make lifestyle choices that enhance well-being and reduce or eliminate debilitating stress if we believe we deserve to live well.” (pg.44)

This section of the piece was written during a residency in September 2025 at @powerhouse_residency

“in route to the woodpile, a detour” (2026)

with accompaniment from Johnny Mathis’s “When I am with You”.

Yes, we need respite and distractions and movement and fresh air. When a skip comes, take it.

lift with your knees not your back (30 mins)

memories
can she get dirty
that was the question
the ED asked
my reference
bright red lips bright blue vintage dress
fresh short cropped cut
and she didn’t mean cutthroat
actual dirt
respectability politics in reverse
for a project manager position
but I came dressed to
interview

[beat]

I got real dirty and relished the sweat

one generation removed
from the land
and then
but then I
fell in love
with a man with land
and hands that build
and dirt under the nails

and I feel

Apartment post

Moving out of my in the heart of Central Harlem brownstone studio garden apartment (two rooms, one window, access to the front patio, private entrance, quiet street) in the new year.

Apartment is two blocks from the 125th Street through-fare which includes Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Target, Staples, Studio Museum, the Apollo and Black National Theater and every kind of chicken you want. And a really special coffee shop within a hardware / garden store called Mushtari. The Schomburg Center is up the street (less than 10 blocks North). Close to many parks including Central Park which is within walking distance (if you’re a walker) which also means you can take the bus down to Museum Mile. NYC Marathon course goes by at the end of the block. Every train line plus MetroNorth is max 20 mins depending on how fast you walk. Penn Station and Grand Central Station are less than 30 mins away door to door by train. You can get to LaGuardia by the M60 on 125th.

Am I selling it?

Many poems written, videos created, albums played, solo dances, books read, feelings felt here. The book “Harlem is Nowhere” by Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts will hit deeper. The famous Lenox Lounge is now the Wells Fargo. And your closest park is the park where “Summer of Soul” took place. And the loose strands of braided hair on the sidewalks will get you thinking to take on the torch of David Hammons. It’s Harlem! The creative ancestors and lineages are all around. The landlords live in the building (I’m the only tenant) and are artists and they have a black cat named Max. And I just want them to continue to have creative spirits here if possible.

I added built ins (courtesy of my love and a dear friend) that will stay and I may be open to leaving some of the furniture, if needed.

Rent is 2,300 a month plus utilities.

Move in date would likely be February/March 2026.
