Preparation is what can make your first time singing a song live turn out like this…

Before this performance, I had sung this song a handful of times. (Luckily, it’s a song I’ve loved long before being asked to sing it, so part of it was already deep in my bones.)

BUT not only did I sing this song many times, but I also relied on my breath support, vocal technique, ear training, my history of memorizing melodies and a few other things...

You say, “Well, of course it turned out that way, you do this all the time!”

And you’re right! I do! Because I practice and work with my instrument constantly, it’s now like clockwork. I know what I need to do to get quality from my instrument. BUT, IT HASN’T ALWAYS BEEN THAT WAY!!

And that’s what I love to share with any singer! Whether you’re a bathroom singer, turned karaoke queen/king, turned whatever you want!

You can too! I tell my students all the time, “Singing isn’t like studying science; it doesn’t need to be that daunting. You just need the right information and guidance to take your voice to places you haven’t discovered yet.”

We are in for a treat this month as we have THE incredible music educator and performing artist @ladyjlaird giving us vocal fundamentals followed by a live performance!! We can’t wait to learn from you Jessie!!

Milton-born musician Jessie Laird holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Voice from Humber College, with expertise spanning jazz, rock, blues, R&B, and pop. Along with a grade 8 RCM piano background, she has trained with leading vocal coaches including, Ryan Luchuck (contemporary), Charles De Raimondo (Opera), and the astute faculty at Humber (Jazz). Jessie performs with Wing Night The Band (Hip-Hop R&B), and Gaucho (Steely Dan) at venues like The Opera House, Danforth Music Hall, Maxwell’s, and the London Music Hall. With over a decade of teaching experience, Jessie is excited to being her version of, The Basics of Great Singing Technique, to singers all over the GTA.

Had a great time the other weekend. My friend @ladyjlaird came from Toronto to work on a song we co-wrote together.

I’ve found that big transitions in life can be really hard. From being in school to being sent back out into the world with a new set of knowledge, a suitcase of expectations, and the fear of returning to my old ways.

As time slips on I am constantly readjusting to this change. What’s the routine? What do I do next? It can all be sometimes a lot of comprehend on my own. How do I make use of all I’ve learned? Am I going to live up to my potential?

Sometimes the best thing to bring me relief is friends. Being around like minded people who enjoy music for the simple pleasures. They just love it. Playing, writing, singing.

My friend Jacob and I have been friends for quite some time now and even though he lives much farther away, I find comfort in knowing that no matter where or when, we can pick back up and reconnect through music.

Friendships are connectors. They are a constant in a world of ever changing circumstances. Their goal is to always bring you up through honesty and truth.

This video is a very real image of our friendship. Me fresh out the shower, Jacob making his way through a song he barely knows, and my partner Lucas hammering away on the drums, all in pure fun.

Thank you @neroyx. I am thankful for your patience and help with this photoshoot. For anyone who knows me closely you’ll know I have been avoiding them for many years. For me it comes with an uncontrollable amount of thoughts and insecurities that I struggle deeply to process. There is a part of me that would love to break out and do things like this all of the time but it is probably one of the hardest things I have ever done. Had a great time at the Born & Raised Concert in St. Catherine’s. It’s been a minute since I’ve been to an outdoor event like this!

Biggest hugs to my wifey @ana.sgs for making this happen. It’s always so much fun to get out of town and see who you bump into. Music is such a wicked lifelong community building adventure and it doesn’t matter where you are, you just might bump into someone you know! I love that! So stoked that I got to reconnect with some friends I don’t get to see very often but whom I always bump into in situations like this. I hope that never changes 🤟

And finally, to all the great bands that performed @doomschildren @dotmoneendot @brokensocialscene @cityandcolour_official it was a pleasure listening and welcoming music back into the air with you! Dallas Green your voice is PERFECTION and I just can’t with your technique 👏
