Students would always ask if Latin was my favorite of the languages I’ve learned and I would always say “Ancient Greek.” Dylan and I had the fortune to visit during our honeymoon this past fall (I’m terrible at posting pictures in a timely fashion...)

Delphi had a profound effect on me and I finally got to see Mycenae - a must for an Iliad Cycle girlie! While we didn’t go to the islands (this time!) mainland Greece was truly gorgeous.

My grandfather spoke with a light Irish lilt, inherited from his parents who emigrated to Philadelphia in 1907. Raised in a strongly Irish Catholic household, I’ve always wanted to see where the McGuinn line came from, where they called home, where they laughed, loved, lost, and toiled.

We went to Ireland in October, starting in Galway, ending in Dublin, with quite a bit of exploring County Mayo and Sligo, where Patrick and Catherine, my great grandparents, were from.

It has been important to me to not view my Irish ancestry as a fun accessory to pull out on St. Patrick’s Day, but a generational legacy to inform my own life and choices. Ireland has a deep past of being colonized and culturally reprogrammed. I am the descendant of the deeply impoverished, of immigrants who left home for a better life despite prejudice, of a people once told NINA.

This trip for me was a culmination of their struggles - that while some of my ancestors never saw the fruits of their labor in their lifetime, that they set a course for their family to have a better future. A mindset that I hope to carry forward through hard work and advocacy for the immigrant, the poor, and the oppressed.

I waffled on posting for New Years. Frankly, I’m a melancholy and pensive person and holidays feed on that.

2025 began with the happiest day of my life - marrying Dylan surrounded by friends and family who are dear to me. Everyday has had a warmth to it because of Dylan and the life we are building together. I travelled and I read and I wrote and drew and laughed and cried with friends and played dungeon and dragons. Joys upon many joys.

2025 was also cruel. I lost friendships - good ones. I left a job I loved dearly and then struggled to find full time work in this terrible economy. Health scares, family loss, fraught emotions.

But I’m here in this New Year. I’m thankful and I’m thoughtful and most importantly hopeful. taken in Náfpaktos, Greece by @ladykivingston

And the pièce de résistance…Alistair.

We met in Ancient Greek class fourteen(!!!) years ago and I want to drive home how lucky I am and how much better things are having known you and watching you thrive. I’m so glad we argued with that one dude over the goddess Hera and then found out we loved video games and Tumblr.

My wedding was six months ago but I still get to post about it dang it! Besides, I get to see this beautiful human in literally two days!

Heather and I have been thick as thieves ever since we were roommates (oh my god they were roommates) in Romania. Thank you for being there for me in every which way. I have loved having this statuesque, soft but strong voiced, intelligent person by my side, even though you’re across the pond. I can’t overstate how much my world is better with you in it!

Holly thank you for welcoming me into your family with open arms and a hearty laugh. Looking through all of the photos, you are always smiling, which is such a fitting discovery as you are always so filled with joy, which rubs off on others. I’m excited for a lifetime of that pep and verve 🥰
