Laura Toperz’s husband will be only gone for a week. Despite hiring a new maid to pick up her duties, she expects the days to go by as they do when her husband is present: mundanely and without incident. She is not prepared to solve a murder.

Elżbieta dreams of riches. Being hired as a maid for the wealthy Toperz household might just be her ticket to security. After one of her shifts, she sneaks into the manor’s forbidden basement in search of treasure, hoping for valuables or jewels. Instead, she discovers something starving and solitary, begging to be unleashed. Elżbieta can only give in.

Soon, sanguinary terrors descend upon the town. Unaware of her maid’s transgression, Laura remembers the bloodthirsty woman trapped below: Karmila, who comforted her in her youth. Karmila, whom her late father swore was just an imaginary friend. Karmila, who now paints the town and its maidens red.

Having escaped under her watch, Laura must decide what she’s willing to sacrifice to bring back peace and quell the lustful frenzy entrancing everyone around her.

Excuse me for interrupting your regularly scheduled WAHposting, but some friends and I are doing a pretty cool thing in a few weeks, and I wanted to make sure people know about it 👉🏻👈🏻

As you might know, I'm going to be at Youmacon this year in Detroit, and me, @ladzwriting, and @tdcloud_writes are putting on a stamp rally full of queer freak sh!t! If you're not familiar with the concept of a stamp rally, basically if you spend at least $10 at each of our tables, you'll get a stamp (/sticker, /hole punch, etc). Once you've "collected" all three stamps, you can go to any of our tables to redeem your card for a goodie bag of short stories, zines, buttons, and more!

I read two novellas this weekend, and because they both cover historical religious trauma with endings that couldn't be more different, they make for a nice double feature. Tones range from hopeful to bleak with plenty of atmosphere. Let's talk about them 📚

A WHISPER OF BELLS AND PRAYERS by @author_ccgonzalez9 🖤

This short romance is exactly what it says on the tin. It's a retelling of The Hunchback of Notre Dame with a nun and the bellringer is a woman disfigured by arson. Claire and Mirela's dynamic worked for me, the sweetness they show each other is very true to the approximate time period. The way their chemistry builds made this quite compelling, and I love it when women work together to free themselves from the cages keeping them from true fulfillment. This is definitely not a nunsploitation, but the way the challenge between faith and the individual play out in Mirela worked for me. Definitely recommended if you want something that doesn't shy away from religion's nastiness while still delivering something sapphic and sweet.

OUR LADY OF HOLY SLAUGHTER by @sjshank 🗡️

I really enjoyed this. The immersion in the time period and the complexities of Latvian folklore juxtaposed against the holy righteousness of a crusade really added to the horror. The crusaders' conviction was just as scary as the way reality shifts under the lady's influence. This book dripped in atmosphere and you could feel the stickiness and misery that is wandering a swamp. My only complaint is that I think chapters 3 and 4 could have used a few more pages to let us really sit with the experience of commandments being broken. That being said, if Shank does another medieval horror, I'm there.
