It’s Frightmares opening weekend! 🎃

I’ve spent the week up at Lagoon teching four completely different shows, and it remains one of my favorite weeks of the year.

Hack & Slash is a full throttle dance show built on big color, movement, beams and spectacle. Nightmare Cabaret lives somewhere between theatre, concert and Halloween insanity. Plank & Plunder Pirate Party is bright, playful theatrical storytelling for kids. And Séance strips everything back into an intimate immersive experience where light has to quietly tell you exactly where to look… and occasionally make you question whether you actually wanted to look there. 👻

As a lighting designer, I love that these four shows stretch completely different muscles. One minute I’m throwing huge saturated looks across a stage, the next I’m building a pirate sunset, lighting a chainsaw dance number, or obsessing over a tiny pool of light on a Ouija board. It’s a little bit of everything I love about this job, all designed, programmed and teched in one wild week.

All four of these wonderfully weird worlds come out of the mind of Joey Wartnerchaney @wartnerchaney . Getting to jump into his madness every year and help bring it to life with light is always a hell of a good time.

Getting to work alongside @bernadettepeebles and his brilliant choreography and ideas is always a blast. There’s something really fun about lighting work that already has so much energy, movement and personality baked into it, and then finding all the ways the lighting can push it even further.

And of course, none of this happens without @collin_schmierer, Associate Lighting Designer and Programmer, who’s alongside me all week turning four shows’ worth of ideas into cues. Always grateful to have him in the madness with me.

Frightmares is officially open. Let the spooky season begin. 🎃💀🏴‍☠️ taken in Lagoon Amusement Park by @lagoonentertainment
