Some solo home nosework this week. Ripley loves to work. Not only does she rush out the gate, you see her tail going. Happy and loose. Confident and focused. Dog's drive to work often results in them working through discomfort/pain. Her walking gait is altered owing to compensation of a chronic psoas strain (she gets regular physio treatments). But while working, it approaches normal. I wonder what her nervous system is doing in these moments. Our sessions are about an hour long, usually 3-4 rounds (5min breaks btwn) of 4 hides of varying intensity (she rotates through 6 scents) #lagottosofinstagram #amazingnose #scentwork by @lagottoripley

Off leash time! Lots of discussion on our online group re: painful dogs/injury, freedom of movement. My groin injury makes epically slow improvement. We physio once a week which helps a lot. We were good about no off leash time for 6 months+ but dogs lives are short and they deserve off leash time/freedom of movement if it can provided safely. Just look at my face, could you say no forever? Park time, followed by 🧊 packs, muscle relaxer...oh yeah, and the dreaded B 🧼🚿 word. Worth it #lagottosofinstagram #lagottolove #bigfeelings by @lagottoripley

Today I'm 5! That's 1,825 sun rises and sun sets. We went on an extra rambling walk. Mum made me a special dinner (elk 🫎 patties with shredded carrot + spinach, potato-yogurt frosting and asparagus). First time in ages that I have been satisfied with dinner and not asked for more 🤤 then I went for a car ride and a walk in a new neighborhood with new smells. And finally dessert #happybirthdaytome🎉 #dogbirthday #big5 by @lagottoripley

How often do you check ears? Despite a bath and good ear clean last weekend, I have been rolling in the dirt most days last week. Inside my ear flaps was DIRTY. Dirt, some wax and a bit of hair coming up the canal.

We always only do one ear/weekend, unless there is a serious need and then we'll do one each day. Things we have learned over the last 5 years:
- meet all my needs first (safety, food, potty, fun)
- camping headlamp so she can see way down in there and not grab exterior hairs by mistake
- I don't like it when mum uses her fingers, I prefer forceps (she uses non locking kind for safety)
- always warm the forceps (hand)
- warm the ear cleaning solution (in a bowl of warm water)
- use a cleaning spray on your razor (she uses the same clipper for my sanitary and paw pads. Microbes travel)
- comfort for both parties - accessible height for mum, comfy pillows for me 🛋️
- when I say we are done, we are done
- my food motivation definitely helps her out

Our ear care routine didn't always look like this. Both parties have to listen. Yes we have to do it, but compromises and adjustments can be made.
