Back to the shallow stuff, thankfully. As we approach August we will start seeing more large mullet rafts up shallow over windblown sandbars, flats, humps, anywhere the bait feels they are safe(r) from the predators that lurk below during the night, which to a trout guy that’s about as good as it gets. Larger trout will be right there with them the first hour or two of the day, as this one was along with 2 others. By the way, this new color from @coastalbrewbaits is badass. Especially in off color water. Be looking for it! Rigged on a 1/8 oz 2/0 @texas_custom_lures jig. I’ve got a few days available next week and scattered throughout August. Soloed the 3rd event of the Texas Redfish Rumble in my kayak with a broken seat and no steering from a snapped rudder line. All and all we secured a 2nd place finish all thanks to God. Summertime 30! Skinny but still counts as a stud any day! Great job Joe, ya’ll rocked em! Staying deeper is never my preference but this week our trout have moved off the main flat earlier than our arrival in the mornings, if they ever went shallower at all. Why expend energy if they have no reason to leave? August has dates available for half day charters, fishing from pre dawn to around 10-11am. Call or text to book! This week a few of my customers contacted me about which @lagunarods I like best and which they should pick. No matter what high modulus rod you pick, understanding how to fight fish up close will make or break (literally) your experience. So, here’s another demonstration on how to land a big trout up close. Rod horizontal, parallel to the horizon, always. Never high stick the rod, this only ends in either a broken rod or a broken heart from a lost fish. Constant pressure with a drag strong enough to make her work for every run, but loose enough to let her run when she wants to. I usually keep my drag hammered then once the hook is set on a good fish, I back the drag off 3-4 clicks. Use the rod for leverage, let that trout pull against herself on the rod, not against you. Meaning, don’t get hasty and try to pull her towards you. Let her tire and turn on her side, she’ll let you know when she’s ready. Hope this helps anyone considering a new high quality rod, this is the way to treat the rod and the fish when you get that trout of a lifetime. @hooksetsara and I took a trip to down south to our salty home pond with one goal in mind catch a limit of speckled trout! Armed with our @lagunarods and @batesfishingco combos we hit the water. We decided to try our hand at night fishing and what a decision we found the big trout ganged up and tearing up our @saltyhead_2020 proseries paired with @deadly_dudley bay choveys. @hooksetsara decided to throw her favorite bait the Swimin Image and had an absolute slay fest! by @lagunarods

Will it break? 🤣 Found a school of upper slot reds mixed in with our trout the other day and it was a long walk back to the boat so I bent the ol’ Trident to the max. This blank is by far one of the lightest the boys at @lagunarods make and I’ll say it’s probably the best trout rod made. Light, forgiving, perfect for absorbing a strong head shake from a trophy class trout. And, occasionally, it likes to whip a redfish ass just to prove it’s the best all around rod there is. My arm gave up long before the rod did, went through 25 of the bronze brutes before I finally had enough. Need a rod? Dirty water, overcast, strong breeze, pimps gonna pimp! 6” Pothole Pimp @coastalbrewbaits is a favorite under these conditions and it was no different on this day. Solid trout Mike! Skinny 8lb fish that just about went 30” but was maybe 1/8” short of it. Hell of a trout either way Eric! (Not me…) Weather has been funky lately but that isn’t stopping us, bring on the rain! June dates available in the first 2 weeks of the month, after that it’ll be mid July before going back to fishing so if you want to get on a springtime giant better get with me quick!
