SURPRISE But I Don’t is out Oct 23

~~

Everything I write is about intimacy; you’d think I’d get bored of this at some point, but I really don’t. New song coming out in a couple weeks so some recent thoughts :::

There seems to be a growing little field of inquiry around the proxy-ness of everything (see Cuck Theory of the Internet). So much of life and exchange now take place through loops in which the human is still necessary but no longer the active subject. Proxies talking to proxies with us somewhere inside the circuit, AIUI. I think we all feel intuitively that desire has taken on this structure of mediation: the match, the image, the evidence that somebody wants you, the interface that allows the encounter to happen. Another person’s desire has become a kind of mediation through which we encounter both them and ourselves.

I’ve been thinking about interpassive desire and keep coming back to this strange contradiction where desire is treated as private and sovereign. You must know what you want, locate it inside yourself, communicate it, negotiate it. Catherine Liu writes about sexual liberation being reorganized around this logic of information, correct self-knowledge, competent articulation of needs, etc. But desire is poorly suited to this model. It is relational, imitative, humbling, often belated.

So I guess in a world more and more proxied, interpassive desire has a utility: someone else’s desire can constitute an erotic fact before you have something coherent to state from your side. You may enter desire through being desired. Does this make the desire secondary or less real? by @lailasmith
