The day was gorgeous. The sky an intense blue. It was a perfect morning and I think the people on the streets maybe slowed their walk by a half a heartbeat for one more second of that clear sky before entering their office buildings. Then came the news of the first tower. Then the second. I tried getting in touch with my ex-fiance, who worked on the 77th floor, but the phones were all too busy with thousands of people doing the same. We closed the office and went to a local bar that was open at 10 am to watch the news. In shock, we day drank. After all, we mused, if this was the end, why not have a few? That evening, I got a ride back to Jersey on a party boat that was part of the volunteer flotilla to get us home. My apartment had the best view of the skyline, but this evening it was gone-replaced by clouds of grey smoke plumes that went up to the heavens. I called my friend. We cried. The towers and everyone in it were in that uprising cloud of ash. The next morning I walked down to the ferry terminal. There were papers everywhere. I picked some up-they were trade slips from the commodities exchange at the WTC. I almost for a second, thought to take one. Then I realized it had the blood of nearly 3,000 innocent people on each fiber. I was in a play at the time and we were supposed to do a private show for employees at Cantor Fitzgerald that weekend. My director called me sobbing - “they’re all gone.” I went into the city, walked south on the west side highway and saw giant trucks hauling away mangled cars and debris. I walked further and found people who had been evacuated waiting to be escorted home to get their pets in cardboard carriers. I helped assemble some of those carriers and handed out water. We all tried to do something, however small. In the days following, with the skies quiet, makeshift shrines and posters filled every wall and fence of the city. Candles were everywhere. And for some reason we all bought socks for the first responders. Terrorists tried to break us. But New Yorkers are strong. They broke our hearts. But they didn’t break our spirit. #911 #wtc by @lainedoss
