Via @theorlandoshine The City of Orlando says it is “pausing” its captive swan program at Lake Eola Park and rehoming all 44 adult swans and five cygnets before construction begins this fall on the Lake Eola Park Master Plan renovations. Mayor Buddy Dyer announced the decision this week after consulting with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission about meeting state requirements for captive wildlife care in an active urban park, while preparing for major construction. Andrea Otero, the Public Information Manager for the Office of the Mayor, reiterated with us that this is not the definite end of the swan program, stating that city staff will continue to discuss what the program could and should look like if/when it comes back following the park renovations. What are your thoughts on the health/life/future of our iconic swans? #lakeeola #lakeeolapark #thecitybeautiful #lakeeolaswans Via @troopersteve “I’ve been trying to understand the anger coming from people who, quite frankly, have done nothing while the swans at Lake Eola continue to live in unacceptable conditions. Let’s be honest about the reality. These swans are not native to this environment. They’re forced to stay, their wings are clipped, and they’re constantly surrounded by people who don’t respect them. Add in the dirty water, the overcrowding, and the daily stress and calling this “beautiful” starts to feel like smoke and mirrors. What frustrates me the most is hearing leaders say they “care” about these birds… while continuing to keep them in a place they were never meant to be, simply to fit a beautification narrative. I have a simple, humane solution: Move the swans to a sanctuary… now. Let them live out their lives in a place designed for their health, safety, and well-being, where they can actually thrive instead of merely survive. If I sound angry, it’s because I am. Advocating for safety has always been my job, but advocating for animals matters deeply to me too. When I see something wrong, especially something preventable, I’m going to speak up. These are majestic animals. They deserve better than being props in a postcard or someone’s platform It’s time to stop pretending this is okay. It’s time to do the right thing and do it now.” by @lakeeola
