With the generous support of the Gilbert Family Foundation, Sadza Space is proud to offer three fellowships for Detroit-based BIPOC artists participating in DETZIM, a three-week cultural exchange, workshop, and research residency in Zimbabwe. We’re excited to welcome LaKela Brown to the residency this year.
This year’s residency brings together ten studio artists working across a range of mediums. Participants will engage with artist-run spaces throughout Zimbabwe, visit culturally and historically significant sites and arts institutions, and build connections through collaborative learning and exchange. Artists will present their research-in-progress at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe and share their final research and experiences in Detroit in 2027.

Initiated in 2016 by Zimbabwe Cultural Center Detroit, DETZIM is a group-based research residency developed in partnership with institutions including the College for Creative Studies, Chinhoyi University of Technology, and the National Gallery of Zimbabwe School of Visual Art and Design. This marks the second DETZIM residency led solely by Sadza Space, the new home of Zimbabwe Cultural Center Detroit.

Get @reshare_app • @56henry.nyc We are pleased to announce two acquisitions in partnership with EXPO Chicago and Northern Trust. The Peabody Essex Museum and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art have each acquired new sculptures by LaKela Brown. These works will be in the permanent collections of both institutions.

The Peabody Essex Museum acquired three works and the Nelson-Atkins acquired two. The three works acquired by PEM include Small Tobacco Bunch of Three, 2026; Still Life with Two Leaves, Okra Pod, and Chicken Wing, 2026 (Slide 1); and Still Life with Three Collard Leaves, One Corn Cob, Three Okra Pods, and One Chicken Wing, 2026. The two works acquired by the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art include Still Life with Three Collard Leave sand Three Okra Pods, 2026 (Slide 2) and Still Life with Corn, Pig Foot, and Chicken Wing, 2026.

My first job in New York (16 years ago) featured an all natural, whole animal butcher shop called the Meat Hook @themeathook . They supplied this pig head! My artist friend @cortneyandrews took the professional shots for my show announcement. Shoutout to y'all. My solo exhibition "A Harvest" closes this Sunday December 21st.
