For the exhibition ‘Paradaidha’ at Kunsthalle in Darmstadt Germany, the Lakeside Collection has loaned the work ‘Paradaidha Gelida’ by Robert Zandvliet

Robert Zandvliet (1970), ‘Paradaidha Gelida’ 2024, egg tempera and acrylic on linen, has become part of the Lakeside Collection.

The art work in a way symbolizes the poem ‘Davet’ (‘Invite’) by Nazim Hikmet (a part of the poem): “Life is like a tree, solitaire and autonomous, and like a forest as a brotherhood.”

For the exhibition ‘Paradaidha’ at Kunsthalle in Darmstadt Germany, the Lakeside Collection has loaned the work ‘Paradaidha Gelida’ by Robert Zandvliet

“As part of its «Year of the Netherlands», the Kunsthalle Darmstadt is dedicating a solo exhibition to the internationally renowned painter and graphic artist Robert Zandvliet. At the heart of the exhibition are nine large-format colour-field paintings from his latest series, «Paradaidha», which invite visitors to linger in these immersive spaces. Each painting in this series opens a window onto a nature imagined as ideal – one might even say philanthropic.

Through the exhibition’s title and individual motifs such as a gateway («Porta»), the concept and cultural achievement of the garden as a place of encounter between art and nature come into play. Thus, the new paintings evoke memories of German Romanticism (Caspar David Friedrich) and French Impressionism (Claude Monet). And through the expansion of the exhibition to include a selection of older paintings and monotypes, old and new, familiar and foreign alternate as one walks through the exhibition – just as in a garden.”

Diederik Schneemann (1978), ‘Smurf Vase’ 2000-2019, Peyo / Schleich Smurfs from personal collections, is part of the Lakeside Collection.

The Smurf Vase by Diederik Schneemann transforms a playful childhood icon into a sculptural object that balances whimsy and contemplation. Its vibrant blue surface and cartoonish silhouette evoke nostalgia, while the subtle imperfections in form highlight Schneemann’s fascination with the stories embedded in everyday objects. By remaining a familiar figure as functional art, he challenges viewers to reconsider the emotional resonance of mass-produced items. The vase embodies his signature approach of blending humor, memory, and materiality, creating a piece that is both approachable and thought-provoking.

“Marisol (1930-2016) became famous overnight with her colourful wood sculptures. The Venezuelan-American artist was friends with Andy Warhol and appeared on the covers of international magazines. Despite her impressive body of work, Marisol faded into obscurity with the general public. Until now.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents a major retrospective of Marisol, the Venezuelan American artist who became an icon of Pop Art in the 1960s.

This exhibition will bring Marisol back to Rotterdam, where she had her first solo show in 1968 – also at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. The Depot is to stage a tribute to Marisol featuring more than 80 international loans.
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen played an important role in Marisol’s career from an early stage. After a successful presentation of her work at the Venice Biennale, it subsequently moved on to Rotterdam. In 1972 the museum added The Car – a real visitor favourite – to its collection.“

Pol Sangster (2003), ‘Plataan Blaak 01’ 2025, inkjet print on Hanemühle photo Rag mounted on Dibond, winner of the Lakeside Collection Award 2026, has become part of the Lakeside Collection.

“Through image stitching, Sangster gives these survivors a dignified, monumental presence every scar, every vein rendered in extraordinary depth. Stripped of colour, the trees emerge not as everyday objects, but as sculptural time-bearers.”

“His work, which at first glance resembles ‘classical documentary photography’, is based on methodical research and flawless technical execution. Although the series of photographs of the 21 trees that survived the Rotterdam fire of 1940 is not yet complete, the jury can well imagine that the whole will be visually impressive and substantively meaningful. The jury regards Sangster’s approach and execution as distinctive and promising for the future of his artistic practice. Sangster himself states that a residency at the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam would be a special opportunity for him to carry out further research for the production of his series of photographs ‘There are only 21 trees’ ”.
