Pour les français dans la salle qui ne sauraient pas quoi lire cet automne, et bien voilà!

Je lis rarement des romans fantasy en français mais là pour le coup, je n'ai pas lu j'ai dévoré! On me l'a offert pour Noël, j'ai traîné un peu la patte puis je me suis laissée entraîner par les aventures de Syffe, orphelin et enfant des rues qui tente tant bien que mal de survivre dans un royaume qui sombre dans le chaos politique.

Je le recommande sans avoir fini la série (c'est dire!) et j'ai hâte de repasser par la France cet automne pour acheter les tomes qui suivent! by @lalectricerecommends

Autumn has really started to settle in London this week. The mornings are fresher, everything starts to feel a little softer and so am I.

Yesterday I met with an old friend who is a photographer and filmmaker. Over lunch we talked at length about art and AI — or rather our frustration around the impact of one on the other — and the importance of the human made, of making time for creativity, of making time, if anything. Later in the afternoon I met with two other friends in the park. We talked for a very long time about life, people, and everything in between. By the time we left the sun had started to go down, we were all a little cold, all a little happy.

Today started with speckles of morning light on the curtains while I was drinking my first coffee. They followed me in between the trees as I made my way to the park. There they danced on the surface of the pond, hundreds of tiny diamonds, you know the ones. Meanwhile a horde of ducks and swans had gathered around their breakfast lady. On a bench nearby a man sat looking at her with a smile on his face, his dog wagging her tail excitedly as I got closer to pet her. She just loves to be “abrazada”, he told me in Spanish. All present — humans, dog, birds — seemed to be as happy as they could be in that exact instant.

I sometimes wonder how we inhabit a world that is too loud, too fast, too too too.

I am, unsurprisingly, a big advocate of the mundane. So perhaps, from time to time, we simply need to immerse ourselves in the tangible, the unrushed, the ordinary — the conversations with friends, the shared moments with strangers at the pond, the pockets of light. by @lalectricerecommends

🍁 AUTUMN READING LIST 🍁

Here's (roughly) what the next few weeks of reading should look like for me. I mostly bought secondhand recently which is nice because — outside of financial considerations — I'm actually going for not-so-new books I've wanted to read for a while and trying to ignore the constant, overwhelming flow of new releases and recommendations.

I finally acquired Giovanni's Room and Kindred, which have both been on my reading list for about a million years, and I'm giving Virginia Woolf another go with The Waves (I'm slightly ashamed to say I've only managed to finish Mrs Dalloway so far).

I'll admit I got talked into getting 8 Lives of a Century-Old Trickster by someone in here in about 12 seconds (wink wink @maargorito). As for Theo of Golden… well I guess I got influenced by about *gestures wildly* everybody.

Finally I, the Queen of Unfinished Book Series, might actually read book 3 of the Broken Earth trilogy. I loved the first two, I just got sidetracked with, well... many other books.

I'm by no means a speedy reader, but I'm getting into autumnal nesting mode, and providing life doesn’t get toooo busy I might actually get through all of these by the end of October (not that the Earth will stop turning if I don't).

A couple of croissants, a bit of Austen and an evening with a friend talking about just everything was, as it turns out, all I needed this weekend.

Northanger Abbey is (I think) the only Austen I hadn't read, and I needed a 'palate cleanser' after finishing a big big book. You always kinda know what you're gonna get with Austen yet it's never boring. I just find her extremely funny and witty and well, what better way to roll into Autumn than with a good old classic...

Well, where do I start? I gasped a lot. Her writing sits somewhere in between poetry and prose. Proetry. There is something very sensory about it, you can almost smell the earth and the blood somehow. She uses repetition a lot but it doesn't feel like repetition because she brings another layer to the story every time. Like she goes digging a little deeper to find the important bits. Yet it almost feels like she told it in one single breath. It's got such an intensity, such a rhythm, a pulse, it should be read out loud.

It's the kind of book I wish I could write.

A detail from my home library, the "French corner", just for the pleasure of it.

I haven't been very consistent here, but it's ok. I'm seeing so many interesting book content creators and more generally a passionate community I want to engage with but it's always the most time-comsuming monster and I'm still figuring out how to balance it all with "real life".

Anyway, I have been busy travelling and I am now back home and in that in-between time of enjoying the last days of summer but also craving my customary autumnal nesting. So much is happening and I have got a lot to sort out and it's all very exciting (/stressful for some parts) but I also want to slow down and have more time for writing and reading - don't we all? I'm sure it will come organically as we slowly walk into Autumn, in the meantime I'm going to try to tick a few things off my to-do list and show up here a little more often.

Sometimes it takes you a long time to pick up a book without knowing why. Outside of the fact that I am both an emotional and a seasonal reader, I waited a while to read The Are Rivers in the Sky, despite being regularly reminded of it by one of my closest friends who knows exactly what I like. "I wish I could experience it again for the first time" is what they said when I finally started it.

I'm not new to Elif Shafak, yet every time I read one of her books, she manages to surprise me again. Three people, two rivers and a drop of water and she transports you through past and present. I don't know what to say except that it is as beautiful as it is sad, as thoroughly researched as it is poetic, and as incredible as I'd been promised. I don't know if it'll be enough to make you want to read, but it tore a little piece off my heart. The fact that I read most of it by the water made it all the more beautiful (but that you'll only understand why until you read it).

I don't think I've ever read anything from Becky Chambers that I didn't like. A Closed and Common Orbit is no exception, lovely as ever, and inclusive in many thoughtful ways 🖤💫

Just to be clear I am excited about my entire holiday tbr BUT especially about this one because 1) I'm a big EF fangirl 2) I offered it to a friend for Christmas and they said it was magnificent but for some reason I didn't buy it for myself until last weekend and when I told them, they were like "Ugh I wish I could experience it again for the first time" and I trust their judgment blindly. by @lalectricerecommends
