ALAN VEGA (VCLS) AND MARTIN REV (KBDS) PLAYED THEIR FIRST GIG IN 1970. It’s taken them almost six decades to become fashion darlings. Years of slumming it in leather jackets zipped, ripped, fringed, distressed and sometimes blood-spattered, not to mention creating terrifying and beautiful electronic (not electronic) music has at last paid off.

Every new generation rediscovers Suicide. They were originals. Influential but never truly copyable. Real; playing through riots, often denigrated by taste-makers until like heavenly stars they burnt off the detritus and filth of their hard scrabble existence to reveal the purity of their music.

There’s been multiple Suicide LP reissues over the last decade, partly precipitated by Vega’s death in 2016. But from 2020 events took an unexpected turn beginning with designer Marc Jacobs choosing the duo’s Cheree to soundtrack his Daisy fragrance TV ad, starring model and actor Kaia Gerber. It was inescapable.

France had always loved the duo. Vega even had a French Top 10 hit, Jukebox Babe, in 1980. Parisian galleries have hosted four exhibitions of his artwork since 2020. For part of his Men’s Winter 2023 collection Parisian designer Hedi Slimane channelled Suicide’s (if you must) proto-punk ethos for his La Collection du Palace: Paris Syndrome show. Their collection found its place within the titular Palace, the legendary late 70s Paris nightclub Slimane frequented in his youth.

But last year American-in-Paris (for 23 years) Rick Owens cut a deal with Suicide. It was a perfect fit, given that Owens was a serious, avant garde designer with a penchant for the dark side. Someone as likely to be reading Beverley Nichols giddy gardening books from the 30s as listening to Lou Reed or celebrating Larry LeGaspi, the intergalactic designer for Labelle, Kiss and Parliament-Funkadelic.

Owens Suicide collection boasted jackets made of Japanese horse leather, track tops, trousers, belts and, of course shades. It was a hit. Confirmation, if it was needed, that Rev and Vega were indeed fashion icons. If unlikely ones.
