Hey everyone,

Our latest design, Goddess of War, has just hit the store! We’ve printed two variants on heavyweight black shirts, with a zip hoodie option too—all in beautiful metallic gold ink.

We’ve released this piece to celebrate our friend and collaborator Emma Pearn’s upcoming jousting tour, which will see her compete in some of the most important tournaments across Europe. Things kick off for her on April 3rd, when she’ll be defending her title at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds. Andy and I will both be there to see it all happen, and if you’re in any way interested in things medieval, you should come along too.

The illustration itself is based on the High Gothic style of horse armour made and used on the battlefield from the late 15th century onwards. We were lucky enough to be invited by the Royal Armouries Museum recently to see real horse armour up close, and I certainly wasn’t prepared for how small it makes you feel standing next to it.

Goddess of War is a special edition design and has been printed in a very limited initial run, so be quick if you want one. Why not grab one to wear to the tournament? You’ll probably find us wandering around with a beer—so if you see us, come and say hi.

Give @emmajoust and @royalarmouriesmuseum a follow too, if you’re into what we do!

Hey everyone,
I thought it was about time I showed my face, because you'll be seeing a lot more of it from now on.

My love of drawing has been a true constant in my life, and I am incredibly lucky that I get to explore that as the artist for La Mort. The creative process starts long before I begin the final artwork, and I want to show you each step involved.

Over the coming months, I'll be sharing how I create the artwork, from rough sketches and composition studies through to the final design. I'll also be talking about the research behind the pieces, as well as the subjects and events that inspire them. You can expect videos on everything from medieval armour and Renaissance printmaking to Symbolist art, folklore, and the stories hidden within the imagery.

You'll get a closer look at the creative side of La Mort, including character design, photoshoots, and product development, alongside some of the conversations and ideas that shape each collection.

Andy will be joining me on this journey too, and he'll be introducing himself in a separate post very soon.

If there's anything you'd like to see more of, leave a comment below. It would be awesome to know what interests you most.

Hey everyone! Our last two stacks of Blackest Dominions art prints have hit the store. Last week we uncovered the remaining I Am The Ash and I Am The Blood prints, which had been hidden away in a plan chest for over two years. They’re printed in a beautiful dark gold metallic ink on heavyweight Vanguard black paper and measure 42 x 59.4 cm (A2). There are just over 120 prints left in this open edition (around 60 of each design), and I’ve signed and numbered each one in gold.

To grab yours, head to the art prints section of our website. Once these are gone, we won’t be printing them again, so I hope everyone who wants one manages to get one. Good luck!

*UPDATE: ONLY BACK PRINT SMALL, MEDIUM AND 4XL LEFT*

Today we have re-released one of our favourite designs in a super-limited run of 250 pieces, split between front and back prints.

The Conspirer was a design I worked on in 2017/18 and it was the second piece in our Strange New Heavens collection. At that time I was busy researching the ritual use of intoxicants and their connection with Romantic and Symbolist poetry and art. The image represents an ancient awakening to possibility of using poisons to enter the spirit world.

We’re planning to start re-releasing archived designs and ‘remixes’ of existing designs alongside completely new ones. If you see something you like, be quick because we’ll be moving on to other pieces very soon.

The calm before the storm. Part 3 of our Tewkesbury Medieval Festival series takes you behind the scenes, into the quiet hours before the armies clash.

Away from the noise of the battlefield, the real story of Tewkesbury Medieval Festival unfolds in camp. Around the Bloody Meadow and Windmill Hill, both Yorkist and Lancastrian encampments set the world up for battle - preparing themselves in authentic tents, and tending fires, long before a blade is drawn.

This is where the work happens. Armour gets fettled, blades are sharpened, and servants work well into dusk making sure every piece of kit is battle ready. It’s slow, deliberate, and a world away from the chaos to come.

Camp life carries its own rhythm too. Fires are lit for cooking, drums are beaten, and mending and weaving fill the gaps between drills. It’s a full recreation of medieval daily life, not just a backdrop for the fighting.

What makes it so compelling is the continuity behind it. Many reenactor families return year after year, playing the same roles: father as warrior, mother as marketender, children learning as pages and apprentices. It’s history passed down in practice, not just performance.

For La Mort Clothing, this is the part of the festival we find most striking. The tension sits quietly in the camp, in every sharpened blade and every family readying for the field, long before the horns sound and the lines move.

That’s the calm before the storm. Part 4 will take you into the fight itself.

Here’s part two of our Tewkesbury Medieval Festival coverage.

After the amazing response to our first post, I’ve decided to focus this time on the thunderous sounds of the battle.

The festival is the largest free medieval gathering in Europe, drawing thousands of visitors to Gloucestershire every July.

It honours those who fought at the 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury, a pivotal clash in the Wars of the Roses, and the reenactment takes place on part of the original battlefield.

Around 2,000 warriors take part, including armoured knights, archers, and men-at-arms. Together, they recreate the discipline of moving onto the field and the quick and violent descent into chaos.

Watching that many bodies in armour form up and advance is an entirely different experience from reading about it in a history book, and the most terrifying and unexpected part is the deafening noise.

Each hand-forged blade, piece of plate armour, and coat of mail has its own distinctive sound, and as large groups of fighters begin to move together, a rhythmic, metallic heartbeat rises from the field, over which you can hear the barked orders of commanders and the shouts of excitement. It’s a powerful thing to watch.

Beyond the fighting, reenactors set up full encampments for the weekend, living as a medieval army with period crafts, camp life, and even families in tow. It’s this level of commitment that gives the festival its authenticity, and why we hope to keep coming back to document it.
Huge thanks again to everyone who told us to keep the photos coming. Follow along for more from the armoury and the field.

VICTORY TO EMMA PEARN AND HER TEAMMATE BENEDICT GREEN!

This week, several teams of the toughest jousters on the international circuit spent six days battling it out in the grounds of Arundel Castle. We headed down to support our friend Emma Pearn and watch her in action.

We positioned ourselves in the perfect spot at the end of the tilt rail. Lessons had been learned at the previous tournament, where it became obvious that with each run you have only one or two seconds to capture the perfect shot.

Being able to dial in your camera settings quickly is absolutely essential! As soon as the first riders appeared, it was clear that Arundel was on a completely different level.

These were top-tier jousters, charging at one another and striking with frightening force.

In the early afternoon, Emma appeared in gleaming Gothic armour atop a dark, shadow-like horse, and we nervously waited to see how things would unfold. The next few minutes were incredible. At times, each jouster was being hit so hard that they were rocked back in the saddle.

As the final run ended with a victory for Emma, I could hear her screaming with excitement as she charged towards me, her lance raised high above her head. For six days, Emma and Ben faced some of the toughest competitors from around the world, making their victory even sweeter. A huge congratulations and well done to both of them!

Head over to @emmajoust to see a whole load more epic photos from Emma.

We finally made it to the Tewkesbury Medieval Festival! The largest medieval reenactment festival in the UK, it commemorates the Battle of Tewkesbury of 1471, one of the defining conflicts of the Wars of the Roses. For anyone with a love of medieval history, historical reenactment, and medieval armour, it’s an unforgettable experience.

Andy and I arrived early and spent an amazing day wandering through the bustling medieval market and military encampments in the blistering heat, drinking beer and soaking up the atmosphere while we waited for the battle to begin.

Between three and four o’clock, a feeling of menace slowly fell over the site as large groups of armoured knights, men-at-arms, and longbowmen gathered silently in the shade of the trees. The hour of the battle drew near and then, all at once, they surged like a sea towards the field. It was an incredible feeling to be among them. More on that in a later post.

Once they had formed up, the Battle of Tewkesbury began. For the next hour, two huge groups of medieval infantry clashed, slashing and battering each other with swords and poleaxes in one of the most spectacular historical reenactments we’ve ever seen. It was absolutely epic.

We took well over a thousand photographs across the weekend, and this post features just a few of our favourites. Capturing the incredible craftsmanship of the armour, the authenticity of the encampments, and the passion of the reenactors was a genuine privilege.

A huge thank you to all who took part. Please do us a favour and leave a comment if you recognise yourself or any of your friends in these photos so we can tag you.

I recently stumbled across some time-lapse videos I made of my inking process, and it got me thinking about making some more.

As you can imagine, the process is very slow and methodical. It can take me three or four days to lay down the thousands of dots that make up a single central figure. The videos are less about explaining how I do it and more about capturing the passage of time and watching something gradually emerge from nothing.

Drop a comment below if it's something you'd like to see. If enough of you are interested, I'll try to film every stage of my next drawing, so you can watch the whole thing come together from start to finish.

I’ve walked across the bridge into Bodiam Castle twice.

The first time, I was eight years old. We stopped there late in the day on the way back from a school trip. I hated being away from home, and I can still remember wandering around the medieval castle in the soft evening light, deliriously happy that I was finally on my way back. When we returned to school, I spent the next week obsessing over a pastel drawing of Bodiam Castle, completely absorbed by its towers, moat, and medieval architecture.

After I’d finished it, my teacher showed my friend how to make a copy of my drawing. It’s been more than thirty years, and it still makes my blood boil.

The second time I crossed that bridge, I was on my honeymoon. Lucy and I wandered through the same historic walls to take these photographs. We’d only been married about a week, and standing inside one of England’s most beautiful medieval castles, I felt exactly the same overwhelming sense of happiness.

As we walked back across the bridge towards the car, I looked at her and thought …

“Does she have any idea what it feels like, as an eight-year-old, to have your drawing of a castle stolen?” taken in Bodiam Castle by @lamortclothing

Hey everyone! Here’s part two of my guide on distressing and painting a human skull prop. Luckily, I managed to finish it before the heatwave hit, because when I’m working, I have some seriously hot LED panels lighting my setup.

Right from the start, I knew I wanted this skull to have a horrible greyish pallor, as though it had been left outdoors and weathered by the elements. It took far more washes and glazes than I expected, but I’m really pleased with how it turned out.

If you know anyone who’s into LARP, cosplay, or prop-making, please share this with them. And if you have any questions about the materials, paints, or techniques I used, feel free to ask in the comments.

I’m also thinking about starting to upload full-length process videos to our YouTube channel. Would that be something you’d be interested in watching?
