This week in the @femmelexcohort , I learned:

1. A Blockchain can be easily recognized by its five main features: decentralization, transparency, immutability, security, and efficiency.

2. DAOs or Decentralized Autonomous Organizations are the management structures that utilize blockchain technology to automate processes.

3. Upgrades to the system can lead to forks. Where a soft fork allows users to still utilize the platform without even upgrading, a hard fork disrupts the network to the point that it forces a change.

4. Blockchain has its many challenges, including complexity, scalability, energy consumption, and security.

5. Philosopher Nick Srnicek (2018) was one of many philosophers who viewed the philosophical implications of Blockchain. His view was that the decentralization of power can still lead to ethical issues such as the concentration of power by powerful persons. by @lanar_flc

This week in the @femmelexcohort , I learned:

1. Bitcoin is "pseudononymous." This means that it is not linked to a person's real identity and that personal details are not revealed. The transactions, however, are all made public within the platform, making it traceable and verifiable.

2. The Blockchain, which is the ledger that records all Bitcoin transactions, has a special programming that prevents "double spending."

3. The Smart Contract is one that exists between the parties to the Bitcoin transactions. It is a digital agreement that is automatically executed once the conditions are met.

4. Bitcoin wallets possess a Secret Recovery Phrase that enables persons to recover their wallet in the event of forgetting one's password or other such incidents. This twelve-word code is one of the only ways to recover the wallet, meaning the wallet can be unrecoverable if the words are misplaced or forgotten.

5. The Caribbean Agency for Justice Solutions is a regional development agency catered to providing technology-enabled solutions in the Caribbean. These include folio e-filing, online dispute resolution, and an intelligence system designed to specialize in automation, security, and confidentiality. by @lanar_flc

This week in the @femmelexcohort, I learnt:

1. There is a species of Sargassum Seaweed actively being used for medicinal and culinary purposes in Asian countries since 200 AD.

2. The effects of Sargassum Seaweed extends to eye issues. Two specific cases of Keratoconjunctivitis have been recorded in Mexico to be as a result of the emission of hydrogen sulfide during the decomposition stage of Sargassum Seaweed.

3. One regulation created to encourage the cultivation and harvesting of Sargassum Seaweed is the European and National Regulation on Seaweed Cultivation and Harvesting. It seeks to ensure that activities are conducted in such a way as to not negatively affect regularly conducted marine activities.

4. A Directive established to generally protect marine activities is the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. It has been recommended as a way to establish and implement measures that will assist countries with maintaining a good environmental status.

5. The Bioeconomy Strategy, to be implemented by three countries, focuses on areas within the marine environment that is specific to the needs of each country. For example, Finland focuses on the pharmaceutical and chemical industry while Germany is engaged in research to ensure that the solutions given are safe and suitable. by @lanar_flc

This week in the @femmelexcohort , I learnt:

1. There are only three main groups of seaweed despite the ten thousand different species. These three groups are red seaweed, green seaweed and brown seaweed (Sargassum).

2. Each group produces a certain percentage of protein. Brown seaweeds produce the lowest percentage, which is only up to 24%.

3. Vegetable protein, which was tested as having low digestibility, has recently been found to be about 90% digestible. This protein, however, has yet to be determined as detrimental or beneficial to a human's gut health and function.

4. The proteins are further from being a viable solution as it is also difficult to extract in its entirety. Therefore, the small percentage already found in Sargassum Seaweed would be significantly reduced should there be a decision to utilize it.

5. A Sargassum Seaweed farm can become a potential threat to the ecosystem and marine life if it is too big or has an intensive cultivation system. Such is the case as it inevitably results in the reduction of a primary producer, phytoplankton, which in turn disrupts the food chain through depletion of nutrients in the ecosystem. by @lanar_flc

This week in the @femmelexcohort , I learnt:

1. A pregnant woman's extended exposure to hydrogen sulfide can potentially lead to the early onset of pre-eclampsia. However, it is more likely that they may develop Hemolysis Elevated Liver Enzymes Low Platelet Count than pre-eclampsia.

2. The maximum distance that hydrogen sulfide may affect a person is two kilometers. After this distance, the gas is no longer detectable. Between five hundred meters and two kilometers, the gas is not as effective as to a person five hundred meters and closer due to air dispersion.

3. Hydrogen sulfide possesses potential benefits to the human system, including assisting with anti-inflammatory responses and the preservation of mitochondrial function.

4. Sargassum Seaweed not only suffocates and exposes coral reefs to hurricanes and rough waves but also uproots it and drags it to shore.

5. Five Eastern Caribbean countries have each received a two million US dollar assistance from the Government of Japan and the United Nations Development Programme to assist with the removal and sustainable use of sargassum Seaweed. by @lanar_flc

This week in the @femmelexcohort , I learnt:

1. The decomposition of Sargassum Seaweed presents an increasingly damaging threat to coastal ecosystems as it smothers coral reefs and suffocates fishes when it sinks to the ocean floor.

2. The effects of Sargassum Seaweed can accelerate the already present issues. These include the depletion of biodiversity in the ocean, and the rapidly declining stock of fishes in the Caribbean.

3. Methane or enteric emissions is around eighty times more likely to accelerate global warming. Thus, a methane mitigation test would have been essential to the public health and wellness given that rapid climate change does have a poor impact on health and wellness. However, unlike hypothesized, the test failed to some degree as it only reduced the emissions by 28% instead of the guaranteed 80 to 96%.

4. Kelpy, a new Australian project, is geared towards the use of seaweed to develop biopellets that can replace plastic. This innovative product is revolutionary since it will not only mitigate direct issues caused by the lack of biodegradability in plastic, but it will also potentially mitigate indirect health and wellness issues that have a heightened risk of occurring when dealing with plastic.

5. Vegans are highly likely to develop a Vitamin B12 deficiency due to the lack of Vitamin B12 in plants. Fortunately, scientists have discovered that algae can accumulate Vitamin B12 from their surroundings. This means that vegans will now have a natural source of Vitamin B12 instead of utilizing supplements that can potentially bring more harm to them.

BONUS - 6. Kee Farms is an organization with an intent to assist with the invasion of seaweed on Caribbean shores. This can be accomplished through their main focus on the cultivation, harvest and collection of seaweed. This seaweed is then used to create by-products, such as biochar, which is in high demand currently due to its assistance in water filtration and purification. by @lanar_flc
