Having a retrospective of my films at the Museum of the Moving Image last week was an experience I’ll never forget. Thank you to the amazing team at @movingimagenyc , especially Eric Hynes and Edo Choi, for putting it all together - and to everyone who’s been part of this journey with me. Getting to direct films is a privilege I don’t take for granted, and I am deeply thankful. by @lanawilson

Dr. Susan Robinson, one of the subjects of AFTER TILLER, passed away three weeks ago. Susan was an extraordinary abortion provider and human being who transformed thousands of lives. With @doctorshelleysella , she created a pioneering model of care that centered on individual and group counseling.

“Hi, I’m Susan, I’m the doctor.” This is how Susan began every meeting with a patient. She wore scrubs instead of a lab coat because she didn’t want to intimidate anyone. She said “I’m Susan” so patients immediately saw her as a human being, and “I’m the doctor” because otherwise they would assume she was the nurse. It was remarkable to see patients - sometimes in the most stressful moment of their lives - relax a little just after hearing that single sentence.

Originally an ob-gyn, Susan was trained in later abortion care by Dr. George Tiller. While making our film @marthashane and I got to witness her profound compassion and commitment to her patients. To be fully present with someone, to connect deeply to their feelings while also giving the absolute best medical care - that’s what she did every day, despite enormous pressure, threats to her life, and stigma.

She was delightful, irreverent, and had a marvelous laugh. She had a permanent twinkle in her eye. After retiring from being an abortion provider she founded a group called “the lonely liberals” in the coastal California town where she lived that soon grew to over 300 people, although some of those people probably just wanted an invitation to one of the epic dinner parties thrown by Susan and her husband Dave.

A few months before she died, knowing she had a terminal diagnosis, she emailed me: “I’m having a ball.” She lived fully until the very end.

Today would have been Susan’s 80th birthday. She was and still is an inspiration to me and many others, and I know she will be deeply missed. by @lanawilson

Thank you to @sundancesatter , @ilysemck , @gyula.gazdag , and everyone at the Sundance Directors Lab for an unforgettable experience earlier this summer.

I surprised myself by diving into theater games, wearing a green bandana around my neck on shoot days, forming a highly exclusive Ermanno Olmi fan club, and using diegetic music by The Eagles in a scene.

I got some things right, stumbled over many more, and learned an enormous amount from it all. In a world where the chance to creatively experiment and take risks without fearing the outcome is rare - if not impossible - this felt like an extraordinary gift.

Everything I learned about fiction directing from the advisors and the eight brilliant writer-directors in my cohort will stay with me forever. Thank you @sundanceorg for the opportunity ❤️ by @lanawilson

“Empathy has no limits.” - Dr. Shelley Sella

@doctorshelleysella - my dear friend and one of the extraordinary subjects of my first film AFTER TILLER - has written a powerful new memoir: BEYOND LIMITS: STORIES OF THIRD TRIMESTER ABORTION CARE, out tomorrow.

Shelley is the most courageous, compassionate, and insightful person I’ve ever met. I’ve learned so much from her - not just about abortion care, but about what it means to live a principled, expansive, deeply human life. She is the person I would call for help or advice in many urgent situations (and I have!). This book reflects all of that - and still surprised me with what I didn’t know: her journey growing up in New York and deciding to become a physician, the moral clarity with which she serves her patients, and even moments of unexpected humor (like stress-baking at a Berkeley pastry shop while working full-time in a hospital).

There are unforgettable stories about patients - people who, as Shelley writes, “make decisions based on the reality of their lives, not the fantasy version.” And there’s the story of Shelley herself, a young woman becoming who she is, and figuring out what kind of care she wants to give in the world.

Shelley was the first woman in the U.S. to openly provide abortions in the third trimester - and her work remains vital. Without understanding the real lives and circumstances of women seeking later abortion care, it’s easy to vilify what we don’t comprehend.

This book could not be more urgent. As bans escalate, midwives are arrested, and patients suffer and die under laws disconnected from medical truth, BEYOND LIMITS gives us a deeper, truer story - told by someone who has lived it.

I can’t recommend it highly enough. Preorder now, or find it in a bookstore tomorrow, and stay tuned for news of her book tour (including a conversation with Jia Tolentino on July 2 in NYC). by @lanawilson
