In the shadows of Basel and its adjacent events throughout Miami Art Week is #BlackMiami who laid the foundation for the city’s artistic edge. The stellar artist Purvis Young, whose murals have filled the walls of #Overtown and Midtown since before Wynwood was Wynwood, was an unhoused person whose name is often disconnected from #MiamiArtWeek. We are fixing that.

On display December 2025 - February 2026, SPARROW features street photography by Blue, Chris, Timeless Jubilee, Reese, and Thor—local photographers navigating homelessness—under the artistic direction of Miami-based artist Christopher Mitchell.

Opening Reception: Thursday, December 4, 2025
Time: 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Location: Fifth and Biscayne Micro Gallery, 398 NE 5th Street, Miami, FL
Admission: Free and open to the public with RSVP at bit.ly/sparrow25 or link in bio

Fifth and Biscayne Micro Gallery proudly presents
SPARROW, a community-centered Art Week exhibition honoring legendary Black Miami artist Purvis Young. The exhibition opens with a reception on Thursday, December 4, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the micro gallery’s Downtown Miami location.

Drawing its name from the Cape Sable seaside sparrow, an endangered bird native to South Florida, SPARROW embodies themes of fragility, endurance, and quiet resilience. The exhibition captures the overlooked rhythms of Miami’s urban life through the lens of those often unseen within it. taken in Corner Coffee Miami by @lanbiakmanchet

Join @kosanba_ , @haitianstudiesassociation, and @firstchurchmiami for the exhibition opening of Nou Souke Ansanm (We Shake Together), a powerful new photo exhibit by renowned photographer Christopher Mitchell capturing the human spirit and politics in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti on January 12th.

Hosted at @cornercoffeemiami Micro Gallery of First Church Miami, this evocative collection offers an intimate and unfiltered look at the spirituality, international affairs, and love that followed one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in recent history. Mitchell’s moving images feature the intimacy between survivors, the complexities of the presence of international actors, and the revival of the Haitian people’s hope.

This opening event offers a rare opportunity to experience Mitchell’s work up close, with a chance to meet the artist, have community conversation, and enjoy Caribbean Jazz over light refreshments.

The exhibit will be open to the public for a limited time, providing a space for reflection, conversation, and a deeper understanding of Haiti’s enduring spirit.

We invite you to join us for an evening of art, storytelling, and remembrance, as we honor the lives impacted by the Haitian earthquake and continue to pursue a #freeHaiti. Curated by Nyya Toussaint. taken in Corner Coffee Miami by @lanbiakmanchet

“Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things…”

We honor the women of the movement, those who are careful and troubled about many things. One must ask what Jesus would have ate, how would he have found rest if Martha wasn’t concerned about both the movement and the mundane. #AseAmenAyibobo #BlackAugust

Harry Abilhomme is a self-taught and intuitive #HaitianArtist. He was inspired by his father who was an art collector and from a young age, Abilhomme had the opportunity to admire the works of the greatest #Haitian artists. He has left his mark on the art world with daring creations evoking skin-deep sensitivity. Based in Port-au-Prince and traveling between New York and Montreal, Abilhomme explores the frontiers of contemporary painting blending mixed media techniques, thus offering a unique perspective on cultural tradition and the indissoluble roots of spirituality. Considering the negative and demeaning representations of #Haiti in the media, Abilhomme firmly believes that his work highlights the positive attributes of the country. Abilhomme believes that his paintings can be a vector of social change and that artists can chart new, assertive horizons. Abilhomme’s most recent body of work "Lwa pran’ m" is a celebration of spirituality, history, and Haitian life, reinterpreted through a fascinating universe, populated by fetish symbolism, men, and emotions. This work was exhibited through Haiti Cultural Exchange’s Visyon Atistik program where Abilhomme was the artist in residence for the month of February 2024. In addition to this New York City solo exhibition, Abilhomme has been featured in a number of group exhibitions in Montreal and Switzerland and most notably, featured in “Haiti-Louisiana: Tides of Freedom” in New Orleans, during the Winter 2024. #TidesofFreedom #Legba #Lwa #PapaLegba #Lazarus #FreeHaiti by @lanbiakmanchet

“Orezon Lakou Sosyete Sen Michèl Akanj” is a prayer born in and dedicated to the lives of the community of Lakou Sosyete Sen Michèl Akanj, located on Rue du Magasin de L'État in Downtown Port-au-Prince. The video offers a window into the physical space of the Lakou, and allows both Manbo Véronëque Ignace (@laempress_vero) to speak to her genealogical connection to the Lakou, and for Kelly Paulémon (@noiredelatour) to testify to the ways the Lakou has continued to move her after meeting it 6 years ago. In this prayer, the artists are lamenting on their own displacement from their ancestral home, Haiti, and they are accompanied by some of the children of the Lakou, who join the final call and response to the Lakou’s patron saint, Saint Michael the Archangel, calling forward the will to continue protecting the space and its legacy.

“Orezon Lakou Sosyete Sen Michèl Akanj” honors the children - friends and family - of the Lakou heard in the final call of this video: Daniel François, Marie Yolene Cabral Boco, Loulouse Joachim, Joseph Dominique Ignace II, Elizabeth Olga Denize, Emmanuela Devarieux, Veronica Devarieux, Fernande Sylla, Yemaya Louisaire, Jean Frenel “Seeyou” Misere, Jean Montina, and Darline Egalite Blanc.
