Wait… Lancaster was the Capital of the United States? 🇺🇸 Believe it or not, it’s true. On September 27, 1777, Lancaster became the nation’s capital for exactly one day. It may have been brief, but it’s a story worth remembering… and celebrating. This September, we’re bringing that story back to life with Capital Day, a community celebration filled with historic experiences, local vendors, delicious food, family activities, live entertainment, and plenty of Lancaster pride. We are pairing up with locals who love Lancaster (like @wildpreciousnow ) to get the word out and bring us all together to celebrate! 🎉 Whether you’re a lifelong local or discovering Lancaster for the first time, we’d love for you to be part of it. 📍Make history with us. Follow @LancasterCapitalDay as we reveal special experiences, behind-the-scenes access, vendors, performers, and everything you need to plan your day. Capital Day is more than a celebration, it’s a way to honor Lancaster City’s legacy. On September 27, 1777 Lancaster City became the capital of the United States for a day. Thank you to @lancastercapitalday for highlighting such a significant event. Even though the festival was cut short due to the weather, the celebration was filled with community and support. Hopefully, next year we will be able to experience Capital Day to the fullest! 📸: @ibeeasian by @lancastercapitalday
Lancaster celebrated a unique piece of its history this weekend, and @mccaskeyhighschool students had the opportunity to be part of it. The @mccaskeyhighschool Drum Line joined @lancastercapitalday bringing their sound and energy into downtown as the community gathered to recognize Lancaster’s brief place in American history. On Sept. 27, 1777, the Continental Congress met in Lancaster after leaving Philadelphia, making Lancaster the nation’s capital for a single day. This year’s celebration brought that history into the heart of the city with performances and activities for the community to experience the story of Lancaster. For our students, participating also meant contributing to the community they call home. Despite the rain, this opportunity gave students a chance to share their talents beyond McCaskey and take an active role in the life of our city. We’re proud of the @mccaskeyhighschool Drum Line for representing their school and the School District of Lancaster while helping Lancaster celebrate its history. #sdolpa #sdolproud #lancasterpa #capitalday #history by @lancastercapitalday
@lancastercapitalday was built around one remarkable piece of local history, but the celebration was always about more than looking backward. Saturday’s festival brought history into downtown as people gathered around Penn Square to celebrate the moment. Rain eventually cut the celebration short, but not before Lancaster had a chance to begin marking a weekend centered on its place in the national story. On September 27, 1777, the Continental Congress met in Lancaster after fleeing Philadelphia, giving the city its one-day turn as the nation’s capital. 249 years later, the celebration continued Sunday evening inside the @hamiltoncluboflancaster for the @lancastercapitalday Gala. The day before, Lancaster had gathered in the streets around Penn Square. By Sunday evening, the celebration had moved indoors, giving more attention to the people who helped bring the inaugural @lancastercapitalday festival to life. Dinner brought people together after months of work leading up to the celebration. It gave everyone a chance to raise a glass and enjoy what they had helped create. Less visible are the planning, partnerships and hours spent turning an idea into something the community can experience together. The Gala gave that work a moment of recognition. Proceeds from the evening supported the Keystone Events Project, the nonprofit behind @lancastercapitalday, helping fund future community events and educational opportunities. Saturday’s rain may have changed how the festival ended, but Sunday gave Capital Day another chance to finish on a high note. Lancaster spent the weekend remembering when this city briefly became part of the national story. The Gala closed it by celebrating the people helping Lancaster keep writing its own story. #lancasterpa #history #community by @lancastercapitalday
Lancaster gets to claim something few cities can. For one day, it was the capital of the United States. On September 27, 1777, the Continental Congress met in Lancaster after fleeing Philadelphia as British forces occupied the city. Delegates gathered in the courthouse that once stood in what is now Penn Square before moving west to York the following day. 249 years later, Lancaster returned to Penn Square to tell that story. History can feel distant when it’s reduced to names and dates. It feels different when you can stand where it happened. The inaugural @lancastercapitalday brought history into the middle of the city with a parade, historic characters, a replica of Lancaster’s early courthouse, music, performances, tours and plenty happening around the square. Rain eventually cut the celebration short, but not before people came downtown and spent part of the day learning more about the history around them while being surrounded our community. Bad weather feels almost appropriate for a story that didn’t begin under ideal circumstances. The Revolutionary War had forced Congress out of Philadelphia, bringing delegates to Lancaster for a stay that lasted just one day. Much has changed since 1777, but Penn Square is still a place where Lancaster gathers. People returned to the same part of the city where Congress once met, bringing that history back into the middle of Lancaster. The rain shortened the celebration, but Lancaster still got its day. For a city that once had only one day as the nation’s capital, it seems fitting to make the most of it. @lancohistory #lancasterpa #history #supportlocal #community by @lancastercapitalday

Why should we care about what happened here nearly 250 years ago? Because history isn’t just about what happened then. It’s about understanding who we are now. In 1777, when the young nation was in crisis, Lancaster opened its doors. Congress came here. Leaders gathered here. Ordinary Lancastrians became part of an extraordinary moment in the story of America. And that spirit of welcome, resilience, and community is still part of Lancaster today. So this September, we’re not just remembering that one remarkable day, we’re celebrating it together. 🇺🇸 Lancaster Capital Day 📍 Downtown Lancaster 📅 Saturday, September 26 🎶 Live music • 🍴 Local food • 🏛️ Living history • 🎨 Makers & artists • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family fun & more Come experience the story. Walk the streets where it happened. Meet the people who are keeping Lancaster’s story alive. And celebrate the city we get to call home today. Be part of the inaugural Capital Day Festival. Follow along at @LancasterCapitalDay and make plans to join us September 26! And if you want to dig even deeper into Lancaster’s remarkable role in the Revolution, Adam Zurn’s book: Capital Day: Lancaster and the Revolution, is a great place to start. Find it through Adam’s page @unchartedlancaster . Nearly 250 years later, the story is still ours. Come celebrate it with us! 🇺🇸 by @lancastercapitalday
