In 1860 Lancaster county farmers grew more than half of Pennsylvania’s total cigar leaf tobacco. By 1900 Lancaster supplied most of the leaf tobacco to cigar makers across the state and the city had more than fifty tobacco warehouses to process leaf tobacco as well as cigar making operations, cigar box manufacturers, and cigar stores. As a point of comparison, Harrisburg PA had one tobacco leaf producer in the early 1900s, while Lancaster had over 50. Lancaster’s Tobacco Avenue, between Walnut and Fulton, once had 8 tobacco warehouses. #lancasterzinefest #downtownlancasterpa #figlancaster by @lancvice
