How better to toast the centennial of one of the most memorable originals ever than with a trio of originals I am lucky to call friends?Celebrations abounded here in LA and everywhere for Monday’s 100th birthday of Marilyn Monroe, and @demonicaphoto, @landofladythings and @neciahairstyling had us a good time. This was also Sarah’s last night in town before returning to England, after a week of shoots styling hair and wigs for a jazz chanteuse, a pop singer, a rock band, and a performance artist, along with yours truly for my party Saturday night. 🎥Sarah, Jess and I started @academymuseum to see the exhibition devoted to the blonde icon, which opened over the weekend. Worth a visit. I will post deeper on that one soon. 🎞️We then headed to Graumann’s @chinesetheatres where legendary lensman @LawrenceSchiller was signing his new @Taschen monograph that included some iconic photographs of Monroe, including a couple we had just admired at the museum. The signing was followed by a panel discussion and then screening of Gentleman Prefer Blondes, the 1953 musical Monroe co-starred in with Jane Russell. There we became 4 broads on the town with Monica joining us. 🥡It seemed fitting to cap this Old Hollywood evening with a late sup @theformosa. Monroe frequented the WeHo restaurant, as it was across the street from the Samuel Goldwyn Studios. She even had a favorite leather booth, which on this night she occupied, in a manner of speaking, by way of a mannequin provided by the gent in the last snapshot here. Her go-to? A Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cocktail and the signature Chow Fun with extra chopped onions and garlic. We forwent her choice of cocktail for Martinis. But ordered up that dish among others. A grand time toasting a fellow and grand Gemini, as well as a proper send off for a wonderful grand pal with the coolest coif anywhere. I've often been asked where my love of vintage has come from, and guessed my inspiration was seeing the 50s/60s-inspired kitch in Pee-Wee's Playhouse (which is partially true). However, visiting the @fidm 90s exhibit made me realize I grew up seeing 30s-50s silhouettes kind of everywhere and those eras of vintage imprinted up on my brain.1.
