18 weeks ago, I had never swam a lap, never ridden a bike on the road, and I dang sure hadn’t run more than 6 miles.

What started as a joke in life group about whether I could do this race quickly became a pretty big part of my life this summer.

Four weeks before race day, pain behind my left knee kept me from running for over three weeks. With the help of some great physical therapists, we finally figured out the problem and did everything we could to get me ready.

Then, four days before the race, I came down with a crazy cold and fever. I was pretty sure I was going to have to drop out. We prayed, rested, hydrated, and I was still sick on the way to Augusta. Race morning was a game-time decision, but I felt good enough to give it a shot.

1.2-mile swim
56-mile bike
13.1-mile run

6 hours and 25 minutes later, I was an IRONMAN 70.3 finisher.

It was easily one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. The swim was chaotic, the bike was tough, and the run was just tragic 😂. By mile one of the run, I had some pretty terrible blisters on both feet, but I figured I could either run with blisters or walk with blisters, so I kept running.

There were plenty of moments where I questioned what I was doing and why I was doing it. I just kept praising the Lord that I have a body that can move and a body that can do hard things.

So thankful for my brother Bryson, his fiancée Kaylie, my cousin Cooper, Bert and Christie, and especially my incredible wife Kassidi for coming to Augusta to cheer me on. Bert even jumped in and ran about a mile with me. Also, a huge shout out is due to the chatt tri club and my incredible friends who trained countless hours with me over the summer.

My first triathlon ever is officially in the books. I’m incredibly grateful for the experience, the people who helped me get there, and everyone who supported me along the way.
