“...to rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God.” – Ecclesiastes 5:19

Huge thank you to everyone who supported me this weekend: those who prayed my stomach would be ready after being sick in the days leading up, my dad for taking care of me all weekend, and @yoderperformance for guiding me to a result I honestly didn’t think I was capable of.

Solid day across the board. The swim was choppy, non-wetsuit, and slow, but a pancake-flat course more than made up for it on the bike and run. A few rookie mistakes here and there, but just lessons to clean up next time. And yes, I was so excited I forgot to zip up my suit. Sorry, Ironman.

Onward.

Forever an Ironman.

It was not the introduction I had prepared for, but I am extremely grateful the Lord gave me the opportunity to race and still find the finish line. Just last fall, I could not move my Achilles and prayed to simply be able to run again. The problems have not disappeared, but to even attempt this—let alone finish—is a gift I do not want to take lightly. The Lord has been using this process to work on my heart and shift my perspective.

They say nutrition is the fourth discipline of triathlon, and I learned that in a real way. I put thought into my plan, practiced fueling, and tried to control what I could. But there were still gaps, especially in how my body would handle the final few days.

Before the race even started, my gut did not feel 100%. I felt bloated and could tell things were not moving through well. Three minutes into the swim, my feet started cramping, and I could feel everything sitting in my stomach. I knew it might be a long day, but still wanted to stay composed and give what I had.

Coming out of the swim, I felt better and hit my target power on the bike for three hours. Unfortunately, my stomach kept backing up. Around hour three, it felt like my body ran out of what had made it through. The muscles no longer felt fueled, the cramping intensified, and the day shifted from racing to surviving. The remaining miles were some of the longest of my life.

Looking back, my nutrition plan was based on the best information I had, but did not fully account for me. Given my usual diet of meat, fruit, and honey, switching to high-carb intake may have been too drastic. My digestive system lagged behind, and by race day, I was racing on fuel my body had not processed.

There were mistakes and things I need to fix. But I am grateful for what this race exposed, because it gives me a chance to learn and prepare more wisely. It humbled me, reminded me how much I love this sport, and made me grateful for it.

You are supposed to give it time before signing up for another, but I couldn’t wait. As long as the Lord allows me to continue, I want to keep showing up, learning, improving, and pursuing it for His glory.
