The February issue of Landscape Architecture Australia is out now! Head to the link in bio to subscribe and pick up your copy. Private gardens take up a sizeable quantity of space in our Australian cities, so this edition focuses on how their design can respond to broader issues, including climate change, the pressures of urbanisation and our housing challenges. The collective impact that these many smaller, residential landscapes can have is threaded through all of the articles in this issue. The transformation of the former Female Refractory Ward of the 19th century Sunbury Lunatic Asylum into a flexible arts precinct embraces new narratives while respecting the weight of the site’s institutional past. Read @virginiaov review of Sunbury Community Arts and Cultural Precinct by @_openwork and @architectureassociates on the @landscapeau website. Photo: The design team refracted the consistent heritage language of red brick and terracotta tiles into something joyful, without obscuring the precinct’s history. “There’s a growing interest in translocating fauna as well as restoring habitat and landscape architects could be more involved. I’m interested in how they can collaborate with ecologists at the early stages of the work while making otherwise hidden conservation processes legible and engaging to the public. Sound provides a way to translate spatial planning and ecological information back into public experience. Bioacoustics could eventually allow us to monitor where cricket populations are surviving and reproducing across the lagoon. Because the cricket inhabits the intertidal zone, its song could potentially become an audible indicator of wetland health. Imagine monitoring across the lagoon being translated into sound in Venice’s public spaces, so that changes in the cricket’s song communicate something about the changing health of the lagoon. Sound then moves between science, landscape architecture and culture – ecological information becomes public information.” Landscape architect and ecologist Alex Felson discusses bioacoustics, public engagement, and developing a model for collaboration in relation to Song of the Cricket, an exhibition and research project that integrates ecology, engineering and the fine arts.
