POSTS STORIES REELS

🎉 It's here! 🎉 Our 2027 Calendar, 'Tools of the Trade' is available now!

For 2027, we celebrate the beautifully crafted and time-honoured tools that carry generations of stories, alongside those that reliably do their job well. The tools of landwork are integral to what we do, enabling us to work the land, produce food and craft products, while physically connecting us to the process.

From billhooks and scythes to baskets and spindles, this collection of beautiful lino cut images created by @emma_reith celebrates the everyday tools that make traditional land-based work possible.

We'll be sharing more about the tools we feature and the people that use them over the coming weeks!

We hope you love it as much as we do ❤️

🌱 RE-ROOTING AGROECOLOGY 🌱

This week we’re launching our new campaign to ‘Re-Root Agroecology’, in service to the movement as a reminder of what it means to use the term and why it holds so much power.

Agroecology is a grassroots social movement and site of political struggle, and to strip it from its social and political context risks leaving it vulnerable to being co-opted not only by large agribusiness corporations, but also by the far-right.

You can read more about why we’re launching this campaign, as well our full ‘Re-Rooting Agroecology’ statement, in our latest blog post. Just follow the link in our bio and click on the above image 🔗

🎥 Stay tuned this week as we share a series of films which delve deeper into different aspects of agroecology as a movement; including why agroecology is anti-capitalist, anti-racist, in support of marginalised and diverse genders and embedded in the grassroots of our communities.

🌱 It’s time to #ReRootAgroecology! Support our campaign by sharing our posts and helping us spread the word! by @landworkersalliance

Looking back on October and National Peasant Month in the Philippines, we saw thousands of Filipino peasants March to Manila demanding genuine agrarian reform, relief from the drought caused by Super El Niño and an end to the repression of farmers who organise for their rights.

As ICHRP Britain and @landworkersalliance we share a conviction that food sovereignty begins with land in the hands of those who work it. Farmers and growers in the UK know the struggle for access to land, and for a food system that serves people over profit. Furthermore, as a founding member of Pax Silica, the UK government is implicated in this land grab, and we have a responsibility to act.

Join us on the 14 November to build a UK network to Shut the Pax Down and support the struggle of Filipino peasants. by @landworkersalliance

Are you producing fruit or vegetables in Scotland on a holding under 30 hectares? 🥬

Take part in our survey, and recieve a £30 gift card as a thank you! 📝

The research aims to provide the Scottish Government with an evidence-base that will inform future thinking on sector support, resilience and development. This includes improving understanding of what makes fruit and veg enterprises successful and what factors contribute to their fragility.

The survey will take about 30 - 40 minutes to complete and closes on Friday 27th November 2026.

As a thank you for completing the survey, you'll receive a £30 e-gift card from @seedsofscotland to spend on organic veg, herb and flower seeds!

This research is being delivered by SAOS, the James Hutton Institute and the Landworkers’ Alliance for the Scottish Government.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: DONATE BY NOVEMBER 29TH 2026

LWA is proud to be supporting the @faz3a_pal campaign to protect Palestinian farmers through the olive harvest season - a time when land-based communities in Palestine are most exposed.

"Every autumn, Palestinian farmers return to their groves for the harvest. And every autumn, they face a coordinated effort to drive them off their land: settler and military violence, uprooted trees, stolen livestock, burned homes, forced displacement."

Your donation will go to communities directly on the ground:
🫒 Protective presence through the olive harvest and beyond
🌿 Harvesting tools and olive saplings to replant destroyed trees
🔥 Security equipment for families — fire extinguishers, cameras, fencing, alarms
🛠 Rebuilding and recovery after settler and military attacks
⚖️ Legal aid and documentation to pursue accountability

Faz3a (فزعة) means rushing to a neighbour's aid in a moment of danger — a deep-rooted Palestinian tradition of communities coming together against an outside threat. It is a campaign of the Popular Struggle Coordination Committee (PSCC), a grassroots movement born from the villages that resisted the Apartheid Wall, sustaining nonviolent, Indigenous-led struggle across the West Bank for two decades.

There’s a lot of talk about food being a ‘national security’ issue at the moment – in government, in the media and in public disourse.

In our latest blog post, LWA’s Jyoti Fernandes and Yali Banton-Heath reflect on how we might reclaim the concept of ‘security’, and use it in a way which supports communities, farmers and food producers – both here in the UK and overseas – to further the global movement for climate justice and food sovereignty.

🪚Our 2027 Calendar celebrates Tools of the Trade; beautifully crafted and time-honoured tools that carry generations of stories, alongside those that reliably do their job well. To help us decide which tools to feature, earlier this year, we asked members and friends of the LWA to share the stories of their tools with us. Thank you to the @thecoppicecoop, who told us all about their magnificent charcoal retort, which features in the calendar as our May image (beautifully illustrated by @emma_reith). Stay tuned over the next few weeks as we share more stories of Tools of the Trade... by @landworkersalliance

🌱 NEW POLICY PROPOSAL LAUNCHED: BASIC INCOME FOR FARMERS IN SCOTLAND 🧑‍🌾

What would it take to build a resilient food system in Scotland?

Thanks to funding from Farming The Future this is the question Landworkers Alliance Scotland, The Regenerative Farming Network and Basic Income for Farmers have been asking and they believe the answer starts with making sure the people producing our food can actually afford to live.

The policy proposal, launched tonight with MSPs in Edinburgh, is based on in-depth consultations with farmers, crofters, growers and farm workers across Scotland.

📊 The reality is stark:

🌱Without government subsidies, Scottish farms made an average profit of just £500 in 2024–25. The previous year, the average was a £13,900 loss.
👩🏻‍🌾 73% of Scottish farms are under 50 hectares, yet agricultural support is still largely distributed on a per-hectare basis — leaving many smaller farms with little or no support.

✨The proposal? A £1,000-a-month basic income for farmers, crofters, growers and farm workers actively working in agriculture — paid directly to the individual, rather than to the farm business.

🧠 Farmers involved in the consultation described the potential impact as “transformative”, saying a basic income could mean better mental health, less stress and more freedom to invest in their farms, communities and the environment.

🗣️ As one participant put it:

“People are more entrepreneurial when they are not living in scarcity.”

📈 The report calls on the Scottish Government to model the cost of a farmers’ basic income and explore how it could be funded : while ultimately moving agricultural income support from a per-hectare to a per-person basis.

🌾 We cannot be food secure until our farmers, crofters and food producers are financially secure.

🍿 October's LWA FILM CLUB offering has been highly requested by LWA members, so here it is:

🎬 DEREK VS DEREK

📅 Available from Sunday 25th October 7pm

On a country road in Devon, intensive dairy farmer Derek Banbury is horrified at the “devastation” of his neighbour’s once productive farm. Dubbed a “maverick rewilder” by the media, Derek Gow is an unrepentant ex-sheep farmer hellbent on turning his land into an oasis for nature.

Shot over three years the film charts the two Derek’s turbulent relationship, as tempers fray, wild animals run amok, and the land is radically transformed. Made by award-winning director James Dawson, it’s a film about land use and farming told by farmers. Blunt, funny and heartwarming in equal measure.

🎟️ Get your tickets by clicking the link in our bio. They are available on a sliding scale, so you can pay what you can afford.
