Eternally thankful and forever changed after a beautiful residency working on our newest performance piece Ignis at @saariresidence.

The only connection to her roots for Landys used to be in dreams, through them she could feel the wind of the Andes and how it feels to spread her fingers as a frog. The difference between dreamworld and the real one was painful and surreal, the calmness faded away in front of experiences of loneliness and not belonging. The dreams were the only language she spoke fluently, but not knowing with whom.

Two years ago she began her travel back to Colombia hoping to find someone to respond through dreams. Someone to walk with through the chaos of the world that took her apart from her roots. Someone to accompany the research on the complexity of being a product of decades of violence, colonization, drug trafficking and capitalism, but at the same time witnessing borders crossing love that knows no limits.

The chaos of the soul has gotten rhythm and it flows more like a river now. Thanks to @estefaniagarciapineda, Colombian queen who responded to the dreams in hers, shared her powerful art and connection to nature. Revolutionary Colombian artist @artistamarginal who never stops amazing with his sharp eye and soft heart. Light and space master @k.augert who lights up the soul of the art and guides us through the mist not letting us get lost from the goal. Clothing designer @havukumpuannukka for connecting stories, histories and cultures like a spider making a web and laughing while doing it. Musician @sophiamitiku for bringing her calm understanding and appreciation of the smallest details that manifest in transcendental music. @ollilautiola for coloring the space with colors through his music and taking the challenge of understanding the cumbia rhythms mixing with finnish melancholy. Last but not least Christian Padilla who has seen this path clearly since the first moment I stepped on the Colombian ground and who is writing the words of this and many other artworks.

Thanks for the support throughout years @finlandincolombia, @institutofinlandia, @taikegram and @kordelininsaatio

I need to be honest, I’ve been pretty nervous after giving this interview in early June. I’ve of course believed that personal life journey is where all of the art is coming from, but some things are sacred and not everything needs or should to be shared. For the last few years however I’ve been trying to remember that small Landys, who didn’t really fit anywhere. She was loved so deeply by her adoptive parents, they gave her all the creativity, joy, courage and bad jokes I now have. Parents can only do so much, they can not fix everything. I’ve been remembering this small Landys who worshipped Shakira, the only Colombian sister showing it can be done with black hair too. I was so proud to write Ojos Así as my favourite song to the friend-books and no one knew what it was. Then Shakira too coloured her hair blonde and became a worldwide icon. I remember the feeling of betrayal, that there was no one to show the path. I remember wanting to dye my hair too, trying to wash my freckles away with a poison used to remove skin imperfections, trying to blend in.

For years I tried to distance myself from my roots, pretend they don’t matter. It doesn’t work like that, the dreams became so strong I couldn’t ignore them anymore. My journey to Colombia was not to find a biological family, I didn’t want to bring weight on my biological mothers shoulders after making the most difficult decision on can ever do. No one else is nor should be responsible for my happiness. I have needed to take difficult decisions on my journey taking the steps closer to what I think is home.

Going back to Colombia didn’t fix anything, I had to be strong already to take the step to go. However, it made me fall in love with myself and the journey I’ve had. That might have been the love that little Landys was missing. She was so so so loved by adoptive parents, brother, grandparents, biological mother, friends, friends of parents, everyone but herself.

This Thursday, Feria del Millón opens in Bogotá, and I have the honor of presenting my newest work, Geografía de la memoria (Geography of Memory). It is an ongoing series of wind chimes made from soil gathered in different regions of Colombia. This installation uses soil from San José del Guaviare, a land marked by armed conflict and disappearances. Although most of the people who disappeared during the conflict were men, in this work I focus on daughters, because my own story as an adoptee is woven through a line of mothers and sisters.

@feriadelmillon will be my tenth exhibition in Colombia in four years, and I can’t put into words how grateful I am.

Thank you, @samuel_hecho_de_cenizas, for being my left and right hand when I couldn’t be in two parts of the world at the same time. Thank you, @fray_lejon and the rest of the jury, for seeing the importance of this work. Thanks you @saritapineda_ for being the voice that shares this story with a wider audience. Thank you @permanentearts for supporting me and making me feel I have a home base in Bogotá. And thank you, @taikegram, for funding the research behind this artwork.

Still can not believe that the Landscape of my dreams was shown in the real, physical landscape of my soul 🤍

The theme of exhibition “Un poder presente en todo cuerpo / The power present in all matter” curated by Melissa Aguilar asked what happens when we take the vitality of nonhuman bodies seriously. In Landscapes, my hair is not passive material: it grows on its own time, carries my connection to my Colombian mothers, and turns the body into land. I don’t shape it alone, we negotiate.

Thank you @melissaar11 for creating space and believing in this project, for allowing me to be part of your vision and your thinking, thanks for @julillobe for making the space look so neat and beautiful, @narciliana and the team for taking such good care of us.

And thanks for all the fellow artists for opening your incredible, powerful worlds to be seen 🤍 by @landystopia

This morning I cried a little bit of happiness and gratitude. The journey back to Colombia and my roots begun with this commission work by @kiasmaurb in 2022. “Landscapes” became my path back home, as my long black hair was always the connection to my Colombian mothers. The longer the hair, the stronger the connection to earth. Now four years after I am glad to share that Landscapes was selected to Artecamara, an important exhibition of young, rising Colombian artists. The exhibition “Un poder presente en todo el cuerpo” was curated this year by magnificent @melissaar11, main curador of @museolatertulia who focuses on Colombian contemporary art, memory, and counter-narratives of violence. Her work explores how art addresses historical trauma and systemic conflict in Colombia.

The landscape of my dreams finally meets the real landscape of my soul. The rumour says I am the first adopted Colombian artist ever to be selected to this exhibition and definitely the first Finnish artist ever to participate. Welcome to the @programaartbo 24-27.9.2026

Thanks for everyone who has been holding my hand during these windy years, I will never forget it. And thanks @institutofinlandia @taikegram @finlandincolombia @kordelininsaatio @koneensaatio for support me in all these life changing years. by @landystopia

What an honor it was to be invited to talk about Colombian politics, especially the start of President Abelardo de la Espriella’s term — alongside Elisa Tarnaala, Senior Adviser at CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation, whose work on peace processes and transitional justice includes Colombia itself and our host Sofia Segueiros. Absolute honor, total fan girl moment, not gonna lie. (The conversation was in Finnish, but the topics travel well beyond Finland.) I spoke from my own perspective as an artist, activist and a Colombian adoptee raised in Finland, I’m one of the conflict’s daughters too, and this was never just a news story to me.

Thank you so much for the invitation @ulkopolitist and @sofia.sequeiros, and thank you Elisa and Sofia for the discussion that could have continued for days❤️‍🔥

We covered a lot of ground:

The tightest presidential election in Colombian history — de la Espriella won against Iván Cepeda by a margin of roughly 250,000 votes.

The violent political history Colombia’s new president is building his term on, and how it still shapes daily life today.

Gustavo Petro’s mixed legacy as Colombia’s first leftist president — real social gains alongside a collapsed ”Total Peace” strategy.

Art as a way to speak the unspeakable, when speaking directly can get you killed: from Gabriel García Márquez to Doris Salcedo’s melted-down rifles to Beatriz González’s memorial to Colombia’s unnamed victims.

The earthquake in Colombia and how it affected especially the poorest and most forgotten areas by the government.

”Hasta tu último suspiro, yo te amo” / “Until your last breath, I love you”
By Landys Roimola, Eva-Liisa Orupõld and Amanda Palo

Created as an initiative for the UN Women campaign against violence towards girls and women, this piece brings together Landys’s imagery from the Lado Animal series with an original photograph by @orupold and a poem by @paloamanda . Landys reflects on her anger living between two countries — as a woman whose body has had more choices and opportunities than many others, yet for whom the concept of safety is far from equal in either place.

In Colombia, femicides rose sharply in 2024, the year the work was made: the first six months of that year were the most violent in the country’s history, with 417 women killed. Finland, meanwhile, remained — as it still does today — the second most dangerous country for women in the EU. A study from that year found that one in four men under 35 believed women can deserve the violence done against them, while the Finnish government continues to cut millions of euros from aid organisations and support services for women experiencing violence.

The work also nods to the Colombian myth of Hombre Caimán, in which a man who commits violence against women is cursed to live out his life in the body of a caiman. In this piece, however, it is the woman who chooses to become the caiman — preferring that transformation over remaining in the body she grew into as a woman.

The work was selected as one of the initiatives for the UN’s 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence, addressing violence against women and girls in both Colombia and Finland — countries where such violence continues to grow more common and more brutal each year. It was sold as a poster to raise funds for Naistenlinja (Finland) and the Chocó Indigenous Round Table’s women’s program.

Landys Roimola is an artist adopted from Colombia to Finland, now living between Helsinki and Bogotá, whose work weaves together her own adoption story, Colombia and Finland, and the experience of living in-between in a burning world. In the series Lado Animal (2023), the artist dreams of claws sharpening, eyes darkening, breath carrying underwater — a transformation that comes at a cost, as home grows narrow and suffocating. When design, fashion and luxury lose their meaning and blood pulls elsewhere, the only solution is to embrace both sides: to live more than one life at once.

To this fundraiser, Landys is donating the piece Rana from the series. This peace has only two copies in the world and this is the last one to be sold.

On August 10th, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake tore through Chocó, Cali, Manizales and Pereira in Colombia. Over 265 people are confirmed dead, thousands injured, thousands more still missing. Whole communities — some of the poorest and most vulnerable in the country — lost their homes in seconds.

I am watching this from Finland, the way I have watched so much of my own country’s story unfold from a distance. The heart has always been connected to the mountains and to the souls living in them. Yet again, doesn’t feel like enough, just to watch.

So together with artists here in Finland and Sweden, I’m doing the only thing I know how to do: turning what we make into something that can help rebuild what was lost. Every piece in this sale was donated by an artist who wanted to give something that matters, to help life and healing continue. Every euro goes directly to verified grassroots organizations working in Cali, Chocó, Manizales and Pereira — no middlemen, no overhead, straight to the people rebuilding their homes and their lives.

The sale will begin on Monday 17. and continue until the end of the month.

Artist, if you wish to be part of this list, dm me. Everyone is welcome.

Recovering from this catastrophe will take years. It takes a village to save a village. Thank you for being part of ours.
