📍Bukhara, Uzbekistan. 2,500 years of history. The city was destroyed by Genghis Khan, but he left the minaret (tower pictured in slide 4) standing because he liked it. It was built in 1127, making it 899 years old.

Bukhara was one of the intellectual capitals of the Islamic world from the 9th-12th century (mathematics, medicine, philosophy, theology, literature). Central Asia was vastly ahead of Europe... They invented algebra (yes it's an Arabic word) when most of Europe was still using roman numerals. Their medicine was 200 years ahead of everyone else. And I never knew any of this before visiting.

Waited a long time for this one. After I crossed the land border from Turkmenistan (an experience in itself), our Silk Road adventure started in the far western region of Uzbekistan in an ancient former capital city called Khiva. The architecture makes this place feel frozen in time.

We stayed in a former madrassa (Islamic college) converted into a "hotel" if you can call it that - sleeping in what was once a student dorm room.

Man of the people 😂🫶🏻. This was a day before my cave trekking adventure (so before my little crash). Bear with me as I play catch up on these vids...

March 31, 2026

Hottest day so far with a "feels like" temp of 106°F / 41°C, maybe even hotter in some valleys. Felt like bringing a fan into a sauna.

As you can see, the village kids love to run up and wave any time they see a foreigner. I probably waved to more than 50 kids today riding through these indigenous villages in central Vietnam.

Today was an awesome drive. The scenery just gets bigger and better heading into Phong Nha from Khe Sanh on the Ho Chi Minh road. Phong Nha is where Kong: Skull Island was filmed, and it is arguably the coolest jungle landscape I've ever seen. Huge limestone karst formations sticking up everywhere - the whole place just feels like another planet and exceeded my relatively uninformed expectations.
