"I became interested in art after years of doing coloring competitions during Christmas with my family. I eventually started creating my own coloring sheets because I felt discouraged by my messy coloring and wanted to express line on my own terms. Over time, I discovered a love for illustration and linework, and what began as a hobby became an emotional outlet through the ebbs and flows of life, as I wrestled with verbal expression.

After taking figure drawing and mixed media at Charlotte, I realized art is a language that allows me to be loud about what I hold inside. I learned to let go of control and decided painting was something I wanted to pursue full time.

My willingness to try, fail and learn opened the door to new hobbies like music, dance and photography. Now I’m able to explore those mediums more deeply and connect them with my artistic practice."

Leilani Jones, B.F.A. in Art with a concentration in Painting, is this week's #ArtistsOfCOAA spotlight!

🛹 What kind of career do you hope to have?
I hope to work closely with skateboarders, musicians and fashion designers to create and sell custom art pieces that can interact with daily life outside of a traditional gallery.

💚 What is your favorite thing about UNC Charlotte?
The community. In every class I’m in, I love seeing new faces and getting to understand different personalities and people... My professors are not only caring and wise, but they push me outside of myself and make anything feel possible. I’ve built a lot of confidence and perseverance, not only in my work, but in my character outside the classroom, and I’m truly grateful for that.

🖼️ Do you work in the Charlotte arts community?
I helped design the T‑shirts for FOMO, a museum block party that helps artists connect with one another. The shirts were sold at the Gantt Center, where I also connected with high school students and showed them what different artistic processes and practices can look like. I’ve also created art pieces for a fashion show, contributed work to a group exhibition at Goodyear Arts, and shown work in the 58th Annual Juried Student Exhibition.

<THE SPACES THAT SHAPE US>

 🌺🇮🇹
Regardless of where we are in the world, history surrounds us and shapes us to either love, hate, or want to make a change in society. In the U.S. fragments of history are either moved, destroyed, or erased. As I reflected on my Italy trip, I felt a deep connection to memory, remembrance, preservation, and culture. As an African American, I will never get the chance to experience specific origins of home, history, and culture. I wasn’t as concerned with it, as I had come to contentment with records being erased, until questions continued to resurface that I was unable to answer. When I came to Italy, there was history all around us. You could walk almost anywhere, and sculptures, buildings, and churches had a story or famous paintings pointing to historic advancements. Slowly, I became intrigued by how well they care for and upkeep their origins, not letting the world around them erase it but build with it. I created The Spaces That Shape Us to bring awareness to preservation, whether it’s through architecture, art, or nature. I want to emphasize the importance of memory, history, and remembrance, and how they shape the world around us, while also providing an immersive experience of what it would sound like moving through space with an audio mix I created, recording as I walked through the streets of Rome and Venice, being able to experience the history of my memory through sound! by @lani4lif3

<K!CK FL!P>
Spray paint, Oil paint & wax on Stained Wood
Skateboard: Size 8

Kickflip is a series of skateboards that speaks on the various dreams I hold close to my heart and how I’m slowly reconnecting with dreams I once forgot after constantly being put in a box.
Projection of insecurity from others slowly demotivates and makes people second guess the possibility of their dreams dragging down their confidence and belief in one’s passions. Some people never recover and settle for what’s easy and acceptable to the public eye. I depict myself holding a paintbrush like a sword facing the “projector” to emphasize on the fact that I won’t let go of the talents I’ve been blessed with. Painting in the board face up emphasizing on the fact that no matter how much you step, kick and damage my confidence I will still prevail. The other two images, Soccer ball and Guitar are on the back of the board representing the passions that are more hidden and eroded from the projection of others, talents I slowly forgot I enjoyed and loved. As you ride on forgotten passion the image and possibilities tend to fade.
This series is a rebellious take on reclaiming what was once in my heart, relearning & reintroducing my art. by @lani4lif3

<Shower•Thoughts>
Medium: oil on Canvas
🕯️
Background:
When introspection meets confusion there’s a striking commotion that pierces through your heart & clings onto environment & distractions… when placed in a environment where vulnerability seeps through silence, I’m able to not only see my surface but the inter workings of my mind, the good the bad and the ugly. When I have a urge to exit the space, I’ll hold myself a little longer, to see the things for what they really are. Forcing myself out of self neglect & being okay with accepting hard truths.
Ignoring yourself not only hurts you but the people around you.

I often time get my most vulnerable thoughts in the shower… I’m forced to be silent and listen to water hitting the ground as I scrub myself clean… little did I know it also cleans my mind as well, I’m left with nothing but my thoughts and God meets me there infiltrating my mind with soap as I’m forced to listen. The more I listen the cleaner I get & the more intention & action I take, a deeper understanding is gained as I’m blessed with his love to keep me present in this space. by @lani4lif3
