LANTERN ARTIST GRANT 002

We want to give young artists money to make weird things.

Every month, Lantern will give two artists $500 each to create an original piece of work featuring Lantern Matcha Soda.

Photography, film, animation, illustration, performance, sculpture, fashion, or something we haven’t thought of yet.

No follower requirement. No professional experience required. We care about the idea.

PROCESS INTERVIEW
“Dreaming on a Clear Day” by @jnaqu

We sat down with New York–based animator Jena Quach to discuss letting go of outcomes, following the images that keep returning, and the hand-drawn process behind her world for Lantern.

“I don’t have to think when I’m creating. I try not to put any expectation or result on whatever I do. In doing so, my results have become a lot more expansive and endless.”

Rather than beginning with a fixed story, Jena lets her drawings lead. Characters appear instinctively, returning again and again until they begin to reveal the thoughts and feelings she has been holding onto.

She also told us that if she created a Matcha Soda of her own, it would be… yuzu-flavored.
