⚠️ FLASH/STROBE WARNING ⚠️ Friday night rolled around and I didn’t have jack shit done for this week, so I decided to make a quick and dirty beat from start to finish on my walk to the train station after work, busted out of some usual constraints. Loose and crunchy, grimy granola type shit. Finished on the sp404mk2 when I got home. #koalasampler #samplebasedbeats #koalabeatcast #analogvideoart by @laotree_j

LORE BEHIND THE STORE presents

SLICE OF LIFE #2

A huge thank you once again to everyone who participated in and came out to our recent beat community event.

This time, we opened up our decks to the community and received applications from across Japan and around the world 🌏 — from Nagoya, Tokyo and the Kanto area to the US and beyond. The response went far beyond anything we expected.

Most of the participants were people we were meeting for the first time, and every single person brought incredible talent and passion. Being together in the same space made us realize once again just how big and connected the beat music community really is.

More than anything, we felt something exciting for the future — a real sense that a new culture and community can continue to grow from here.

Following the recent major earthquake in Kumamoto, we also wanted to think about what we could do through music. This led to our fundraising effort, and we have now completed the donation.

Thank you so much to everyone who contributed, and to everyone in Kumamoto who gave us advice and guidance.

The beat community reaches across the world. 🌏
We hope what we do through music and community can become even a small catalyst for positive change.

We’ll be sharing more photos from the event soon.

Thank you again to everyone who was part of SLICE OF LIFE #2! 🔈

And stay tuned for SLICE OF LIFE #3! 👀🔥 taken in LORE Behind the STORE by @laotree_j

Sample from a Polish singer who sang in Russian, Anna German (you read that right). #koalasampler #boombap #samplebasedbeats #analogvideoart by @laotree_j

Some good sounds in that pack! Once again I used every pad, and the track consists of only samples from the pack. #samplebasedbeats #koalasampler #koalabeatcast #breakbeats #analogvideoart by @laotree_j

Loved the Keiji Haino sample this week. Threw it in the Chopper, laced it with some nasty bass synth, got a bit of low-frequency tinnitus, and called it a week.

Got a bad case of option paralysis with this sample pack. So much sound, and no open pads!
Did another loose jam, it’s kind of a mess but hopefully it’s got some bounce. #samplebasedbeats #boombap #koalasampler #koalagang by @laotree_j

It was a simple, fairly ambient sample this week, so I went with an uptempo breakbeat and layered some synths and quokka bass on top. #koalasampler #breakbeat #samplebasedbeats #analogvideoart by @laotree_j

A loose live jam with no preprogrammed patterns, just triggering samples. Found a place for every piece in the pack (almost; I think I forgot a couple of pads in the live performance). Overlaid some diy video feedback synth on the performance. #koalasampler #samplebasedbeats #analogvideoart #vídeofeedback by @laotree_j

This week’s sample was a rip of Japanese karaoke vinyl, so it sounded like a lot of the records I’ve pulled from bargain bins. Right at home chopping this shi. Still loving my video feedback synth for the visuals. #koalasampler #boombap #samplebasedhiphop #japanesevinyl #analogvideoart by @laotree_j
