The archive remembers. The machine dreams~*

DEFRAG: Archive of Synthetic Dreams
November 18–19 · Vancouver

Last November, I discovered that @internetarchive has a home at @thepermanent330 in Vancouver. As a new media artist and lifelong internet nerd, I knew I needed to make a show happen there.

Meanwhile, I’d been experimenting with my own art archive alongside @pass_phil's @metacreationlab for Creative AI. Now these threads come together.

Two days of moving-image art, generative installations, screenings, workshops and live audiovisual performance - alongside servers preserving pieces of the internet’s history.

The Metacreation Lab brings artists and researchers (including @arshiasobhan, @paul_triana, and @bingmiaozheng) to the mix, exploring small AI models, open-source tools and systems artists build themselves. These experiments sit alongside archival remix and internet culture, including pieces by @carlagannis + @landocliffs and @lorna.mills.

What do we preserve? What do we remix? What might we dream next?

↳ NOV 18
Creative AI demo/workshops + exhibition preview + Ways of Something, Episode 1, compiled by Lorna Mills with participating artists.

↳ NOV 19 · 6–11 PM
Exhibition + live audiovisual performances including Shelley's Dream by @carlfaia + a collaborative performance by Phillipe Pasquier, Paul Triana, Erica Lapadat-Janzen & Misagh Azimi followed by @misagh.azimi's Techno set.

📍 The Permanent · 330 West Pender St

GLIMBO (Glitch + Bimbo), 2012

The bimbo isn’t a person. It’s a format.

I made this series 14 years ago thinking about how femininity gets constructed, edited, and circulated online.

At the time it felt exaggerated. Now it feels infrastructural.

To glitch is to interrupt. To glitch is to deconstruct.

Soft violence. @lapadatjanzen received 850+ hostile replies when she posted her AI-generated art to Threads.

Instead of getting defensive, she coded each reply into one of six categories, and analyzed them like data.

Her take? “Punishment dressed up as morality.”
