Todavía tenemos carteles realizados en colaboración con el Museo de Historia Natural de Palestina. Las pinturas de los carteles fueron realizadas por jóvenes estudiantes que asistieron al campamento de verano en el Museo de Historia Natural de Palestina en 2016. Si deseas comprar un cartel, envíanos un mensaje en Instagram. Pedimos una oferta mínima de 30 euros que se puede pagar en efectivo, paypal o transferencia. Todos los fondos van al museo.

The paintings on the posters were made by young students who attended the summer camp at the Palestine Natural History Museum in 2016. La Papeleria, directed by Maureen Muse and Andrea Fontana, has come to an end.

We began this project three and a half years ago without knowing what would happen. We were driven by a commitment to test an idea—to consider how an exhibition space could be re-signified.

We wanted to invite each artist to transform their ideas and practices in the space and with the space. The markings, stains, and cracks became just as important as the exhibition itself.

San Mateo 12 will always carry the marks of this project, and we are deeply grateful to have been able to propose it to Madrid. None of this would have been possible without the generosity and openness of the artists who worked with us—artists who challenged themselves and the space—nor without the support of our friends, family, and the city.

We would like to thank all of the artists, designers, curators, writers, poets, musicians, and individuals who collaborated with us throughout these years.

We also want to offer a special thank you to Patricia Martin. La Papeleria at calle San Mateo 12 belongs to Patricia Martin, and without her invitation—and her belief in our ability to propose and realize our ideas—our project in her space would not have happened.

We want to close with a note on our relationship to the Palestinian cause. Over the course of this project, we witnessed friends in the West Bank enter an even darker phase of an ongoing nightmare.

The genocide that continues in Gaza and the West Bank has laid bare the kind of world we are living in. To have the ability to respond through our work, alongside our colleagues, is a testament to the power of wielding ideas—and to the violence of taking them away.

At La Papeleria, we worked with what was available to us—to speak out of necessity, and in response to a specific space and time, about what could be said.

We cannot fully describe the gratitude we feel for having seen this project through, and excitement for what comes next.

For her exhibition in La Papeleria, Maureen Muse approached the space with a site-specific mindset, intervening in the gallery not simply to exhibit work, but to transform the space itself into a new image.

The interventions were conceived not as ends in themselves, but as means toward a photographic outcome. Every formal decision was made with the intention of producing a photographic image.

In this sense, the exhibition space functioned less as a traditional venue and more as a generative site for image-making, with the final photographic image as a result. by @lapapeleria_exposiciones

La primera activación en La Papeleria fue Plaza Mandela, una película en 16 mm realizada por Maureen Muse en 2022 curado por Andrea Fontana.

La película fue filmada por la artista en capítulos conectados por un guion basado en la memoria de las imágenes. Durante el rodaje, filmó en la misma dirección en la que proyectaba el proyector, creando así una película sin fin.

Para la última exposición en La Papeleria, Maureen continuó su trabajo en torno al cine y abrió la pared para presentar la misma mesa que utilizó para la proyección en 2022, que además es la mesa original de La Papeleria cuando aún funcionaba como Papeleria del barrio.

Durante los últimos tres años del proyecto habíamos conservado la mesa oculta detrás de la pared.

The first activation at La Papelería was Plaza Mandela, a 16 mm film made by Maureen Muse in 2022, curated by Andrea Fontana.

The film was shot by the artist in chapters connected by a script based on the memory of images. During filming, she shot in the same direction in which she projected the projector, thus creating an endless film.

For the latest exhibition at La Papelería, Maureen continued her work around cinema and opened the wall to display the same table she had used for the 2022 projection, which is also the original table from La Papelería when it still operated as the neighborhood stationery store.

For the past three years of the project, we had kept the table hidden behind the wall. by @lapapeleria_exposiciones

The body of the image, the image as the body, the body is the space.

Or:

The image is the space, the body is the space, the body is the image.

Or again:

The space is the body, is the image, the body is the space.

Maureen Muse cracks the space, revealing its interiors.
The gesture is a wound that caresses the space.
She appropriates the architectural, understood in its most ample sense, of its histories, of all the images that have passed through. Through a constant process of resignification: the space is the body; the body is the image.

And, at the same time: the body is the image.
And the image is the space.

Maureen explores the nature of the image, its most intrinsic conditions. Within this conceptual triptych –image, body, space– terms that she uses interchangeably while maintaining their own essence, the tension that pierces through her practice of cinema, installation, and photography emerges.

The exhibition presents what has always been there, and at last, it is unveiled in its bareness: an image-structure-body, both latent and present, existing in a contradiction that does not heal, but rather multiplies and stretches within itself.

The image already exists. The artist merely assumes the gesture of unveiling it.

El cuerpo de la imagen, el espacio como cuerpo, el cuerpo es el espacio.

O bien:

La imagen es el espacio, el cuerpo es espacio, el espacio es imagen.

O incluso:

El espacio es el cuerpo, es la imagen, el cuerpo es espacio.

Maureen Muse parte el espacio, desvelando sus interiores. El gesto es una herida que acaricia el local. Se apropia de lo arquitectónico, que aquí entendemos en sentido amplio, de sus historias, de todas las imágenes que aquí se han albergado. Suspendiéndose en un constante proceso de resignificación del espacio: el espacio es cuerpo; el espacio es imagen.

Pero, a la vez: el cuerpo es imagen. Y la imagen es espacio.

Maureen reflexiona sobre qué es una imagen, sus condiciones más intrínsecas. Con este tríptico conceptual –imagen, cuerpo, espacio– que se intercambian mientras mantienen sus propias identidades, emerge la tensión que atraviesa su práctica entre cine, instalación y fotografía.

Se presenta en esta exhibición lo que siempre ha estado allí, y por fin, se desvela en su desnudez: una imagen-estructura-cuerpo, latente y presente a la vez, existiendo en una contradicción que no se sana, si no que se multiplica y se estira en sí misma.

La imagen ya existe, la artista solamente asume el gesto de desvelarla.
