🌱 If you have not heard, my book, A Perpetual Journal Practice, Building a Connection with Nature, will be published June 23rd, 2026 by @timberpress ! I’m so excited and grateful for this chance to share this journaling practice that has deeply resonated with so many budding artists and naturalists.

🌱 Preorders are open now at your local independent bookstore, Bookshop.org, and at Hachette (link in bio, plus automatic 20% off). Thank you for supporting this dream of mine and sharing with others.

🌱 Inside the book, you’ll see the 52 pages from my perpetual journal, read about the philosophy of the practice, see examples of how the pages build over the years, and learn basic techniques and tips for getting started.

🌱 Thank you dearly for this enthusiastic community of perpetual journal artists who have been with me for many years, connecting with each other, paying attention to the subtle changes in the seasons, and sharing their nature observations via their journal pages.

October means leaves 🍂 and I just can’t stop collecting them, drawing them in my perpetual journal, and sometimes painting them. Here, I added a maple leaf to my mini works on stretched vellum (@pergamena_ny ) for my February 2027 exhibit at @secondstreetgallery !

Are you as obsessed about fall leaves like I am? Do you have a favorite mini painting here? by @laragastinger

It’s been an inspiring several days in Denver at the @asba.art annual conference!

🌱 I took a carbon dust class with Deb Shaw and learned about applying carbon dust to my pre-treated coffee paper
🌱 I drew roots with charcoal pencils on duralar
🌱 Taught a detailed watercolor class focusing on roots!
🌱 Visited my moonglow painting @denverbotanic
🌱 Taught a field sketching class about starting a perpetual journal

And visited with so many good friends, new and old!

🌱 I’m still visiting these high mountains and there will NOT be an Instagram live on Monday the 5th. See you back in the 12th! by @laragastinger

I’m still drawing and painting on these stretched vellum panels….they are compilations of the 20+ years of nature notes and observations in my perpetual journals….starting back in 2001.

These paintings will be on display at @secondstreetgallery in February and March 2027, in my show called “Refrains of Nature.” I think they are going to be a feast for the eyes all lined up!

Supplies: micron pen, @pergamena_ny vellum, watercolor, each 10 x 10. by @laragastinger

At the end of August, I had the great joy and privilege of being the “travel artist” in a trip to see the oldest, largest, and tallest trees in the world led by the supportive and knowledgeable staff of @oakspringgardenfoundation .

My bookmaker, Lindsey Mears @realwondercabin , made a custom accordion journal with 140 lb hot press Fabriano artistico paper for me to record the trip. During the trip, each evening and early morning, I’d record our adventures with notes about the trees and lightly sketch in smaller specimens like cones and associated plants. The featured trees include the ancient bristlecone pines (4000 + years old!), the sequoias, and the coastal redwoods.

At the same time, I sketched and painted in the field on small pieces of pre-cut 300 lb Fabriano artistico hot press paper. When I returned home, I refined details in the accordion journal, added extra color and worked on more tree sketches from my photos.

I learned so much and really appreciated the task of recording the trip since I felt like I lived it numerous times….in person, recording notes, and refining the details. Drawing one’s travels amplifies the experience. I encourage you to record, draw, and reflect on your adventures as a way to slow down and be present.

I’m forever grateful to @oakspringgardenfoundation for inviting me along. It was an honor, joy, and a dream of mine to see and draw these trees. by @laragastinger
