EDIT: 1870s-90s

Antique 1920s-30s Palaka plaid Japanese Hawaiian plantation workers shirt/jacket (1 of 2) NFS

Hand sewn buttonholes, several different repairs made by machine. This one only had two lower buttons and a safety pin closure, leading me to think this one was used more as a jacket versus the other with a complete button placket. White cotton lined waistband on both pieces. This one has more intense sun fading on the shoulders and arms, held in contrast by the unfaded interior. Plantation workers wore long sleeves and pants to protect from the intense sun and sharp sugar cane fronds. When I found this it was inside out, meaning the last person to have touched this was most likely working on the mends. Made from thick, 100% cotton, unlike the thinner contemporary palaka fabrics made from a synthetic cotton blend. One of two shirts found in a cardboard box in the attic of the Plantation Museum north of Hilo.

I am beyond lucky to have found not one but two pieces of Kamaʻāina history, which is as much apart of me as my early Kansas settler heritage. I am a third/fourth generation Japanese Hawaiian immigrant, I am Kamaʻāina. by @larissamatsuko

This painting was banging against the walls of my mind ready to be born into the world a few days ago and now shes here! Mythical rising sun moth with poppies and a nine-patch border, along with my first attempt at a beeswax candle. Not sure yet what to call this beauty but let me know if you have any good suggestions!

Also looking for any cheap/old canvases to paint over! by @larissamatsuko

What’s in a name
What’s in your blood?

One half of me is a third generation American immigrant. The other half stems from the inception of this country in the early days of European immigration to this country. Who am I in relation to those who are imprisoned, deported, enslaved to this country today? I carry the trauma of the internment camps where my great grandfather taught himself to knit as he was relocated across the nation he fled to. I carry the trauma of my grandmother who became the head matriarch of her household when she was but a child and her father was sent to the mainland. I also carry the trauma of those who were told natives would try to take “their” land. And the trauma of the Huguenots escaping religious persecution. I can’t fully claim the pain that lives within my generational pasts. But what am I to do when I see so much of the human pain that has happened to my ancestors happening to marginalized groups today? Sit here and not speak of my privilege as if it wasn’t a sacrifice of those who came before me?

Why are we always fighting? My face is the result of compromise, of love and of connection of one human to another. We all live here and have to learn how to live with each other without conflict. We all want to pursue happiness which is defined as a human right. Why is America touted as the greatest nation where dreams do happen when we send away the dreamers? What are we left with?

I choose not to settle. Our purpose on this rotating ball is not defined. But I can’t ever see how that purpose could be used to destroy the inherent happiness of our fellows.
