My big dragon

Little names 3
24in x 24in
Gel transfer, acrylic, gesso on wood board

Kaden didn’t come into the world with a Chinese name. The way he got one was kinda like how my dog got his name. My dogs named smougahdoo my sister came up with it, I didn’t think it would stick but we took him to the vet and my mom put it down on paper so I guess that was his government from then on. Kaden never had a Chinese name but I started calling him Li lil dragon cause he was born on the year of the dragon and I couldn’t name him Li little dragon, it was already taken 李小龙 is Bruce lees name, baby mama said why should he be little dragon when he could be a big dragon 李大龙 and we jokingly started calling him but big dragon is quite the name to live up to lol every time some one hears it they laugh a little seems like they don’t take it seriously but my mom was telling everybody that was his name, so like smougahdoo it just stick. lil man really got a big dragon in him though if u know him fr. But what kinda dragon scared of heights!? 😂 by @larryli_studio

Little names 2
18in x 24in
Acrylic, gel transfer, gouache, gesso

I don’t remember how old I was, my grandpa was still alive, those summers spent in my father’s home town all blend together into one abstract memory. But this particular memory stuck with me. I heard my grandfather call out to his son in a way I’ve never heard before, my dad had a little name I guess, a nick name, a pet name? “Xiao Ming” directly translates into little name. I always thought that was funny as hell. Chinese folks often shorten their name into something more fun and conversable, I never thought my dad had one, he already had a short name, my whole family does. Usually I meet people with three character names, for some reason my whole family has two characters, what was the point of having a little name when we already had a short one. I called out to him later that night on our stroll thru the park with his little name. He ain’t like that. That was the only time I ever felt fear towards the man. Maybe only his father called him that. by @larryli_studio
