I had the great fortune of visiting the studios of some of the Leipzig-based artists from the Pictura Montreal-Leipzig exhibition during my stay in Germany. Here is a look into painter Lars Anker Rasmussen’s workshop.

“In my painting, I bring together a wide spectrum of influences from music, the natural sciences, and landscape to engineering, art history, and more. My images are populated by a multitude of distinct apparatuses, tools, and instrument-like forms that create a peculiar kind of figuration. These man-made elements appear within landscapes that are, for the most part, undefined in terms of time and space; they exist in a state of flux, detached from any specific setting.
 Central to my work is an exploration of processes that are invisible or difficult to visualize. Through transformation, displacement, and montage, I seek to find pictorial solutions for things that can only be sensed or intuited. In this process, the role of the subject matter within the pictorial structure remains dynamic and fluid. The aim is to create a composition that invites various journeys of exploration, interpretations, and contextualizations. I create a space that is not limited to a single theme but instead combines fragments drawn from diverse spatial and temporal contexts. Painting thus becomes an ongoing expression of a broad curiosity and a spirit of experimentation.”  @larsankerrasmussen

Pictura Montréal-Leipzig is a major international group exhibition uniting Canadian and German painters in the Werkschauhalle of Leipzig’s renowned @spinnereileipzig complex. Co-curated by Pictura founder @trevor_kiernander and German curator @sophiapietryga , the exhibition runs until August 8, 2026.
