Nina Simone is perhaps the greatest performer to ever live. Besides being a virtuosic pianist, she is a master at conveying any emotion with her singular depth and sincerity. Some of her albums are comforting, some are challenging, some are exuberant. This one feels deeply personal.

The album begins with Be My Husband, sung with the only accompaniment being an occasional hand clap, exuding a maddening sense desire that can barely be contained. It also features two of her most popular songs from early in her career, Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out and Trouble In Mind. One of the most rewarding aspects of her body of work is how versions of her favorite songs are often quite different. Like any masterful artist, she is always present in her performance, never trying to imitate anyone, let alone her past self. The album concludes with the one-two punch of her harrowing rendition of Billie Holliday’s Strange Fruit, then the spiritual Sinnerman, which sizzles with energy for ten minutes before an explosive conclusion.

If I could only keep one record, it would be this one. I don’t listen to it very often, maybe twice a year, because not only does it demand your full attention, it demands a deep emotional investment. You will be rewarded, trust me. Truly, a perfect album. by @lastfullmeasure

Got to spend the weekend celebrating my niece’s second birthday at my favorite place, @elmwoodparkzoo. Heard someone playing piano while we were there and turns out it was a student from my songwriting camp (forgot to get a picture but he crushed it.) Oh yeah, played some records too. Over and out ☮️

Steel Tipped Dove - Call Me When You’re Outside (2021)
Little Richard - The Fabulous Little Richard (1959, Mono)
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Green River (1969)
Issac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul (1969/1978)
Curtis Mayfield - Super Fly (1972)
Charles Mingus - Mingus Moves (1974)
Thelonious Monk - Underground (1968)
Serge Chaloff - Blue Serge (1956/1980, Mono) by @lastfullmeasure

I was 16 when I picked up a used CD of Sonic Youth’s “Dirty”. By the time I got to the second track on the drive home, I almost had to pull over. It tore my brain to shreds. Sure, The Velvet Underground and The Stooges experimented with “noise” but SY took the ubiquitous electric guitar and used it to regularly make chaos. Driving, hazy, groovy chaos. I was thrilled that rock music was exciting to me again.

Sometimes a band’s catalog becomes so familiar that the power it once had is somewhat diminished. This album of their last U.S. show brought it back for me. I was lucky enough to see them in 2009, but this record is somethin else. Never a band to just play the hits (what hits?), the set features five songs from their 1985 album Bad Moon Rising. The entire show rips from start to finish. Their energy and intensity is unmatched. Thurston is a stage banter god and it doesn’t hurt that this shit is mixed LOUD.

The story of the end of the band seems to always focus on Kim and Thurston’s divorce. The music itself deserves more attention. This album is a fitting final chapter honoring their legacy as one of the best to ever do it. Thank you to the band that taught me there is beauty in succumbing to chaos. by @lastfullmeasure
