A whistle is probably the lightest thing you can pack on a hike and it can literally save your life.

In distress 🆘: 6 blasts wait 1 minute, repeat.

Responding 👂🏾: 3 blasts wait 1 minute, repeat.

No whistle ❌: in the UK call 999 and ask for Mountain rescue soon as you can.

Moel Famau, the “Mother Mountain” 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
It’s the highest point of the Clwydian Range in North Wales at 554m. It’s nicknamed “Scouse Mountain” because many Liverpudlians love a day out there but I’m not sure why.
I went on a cloudy day, the walk is a steady incline the whole way up. Moderate, not brutal, and we were up and back to the car in under two hours.
At the top you’ll find the Jubilee Tower, built in 1810 and toppled by a storm in 1862. Standing on the ruins of something that old, makes climb feel worth it. On a clear day the views stretch across the Cheshire plain, toward Liverpool, and even to Snowdonia.

If you’re new to hiking, this is a great one to start with and if you want to see places across the UK that may be less popular but just as special, follow my journey🫶🏾

Someone told me recently how they liked how I get to go on all these adventures.

And of course, there’s a fun factor in hiking, which isn’t a lot if you ask me.

But what both of us didn’t know was that I actually need to be outside to really be myself in society.

It wasn’t until I stepped off the beaten track after almost a month of no hikes, that I could physically feel a massive release valve to my soul open and i just felt light.

I’m not saying hiking heals everything, I’m saying it give you the one thing you need to deal with everything else, clarity… and it’s fun and free 😁

Solo hiking for me doesn’t start at some car park. It starts the moment I hear a place named and start figuring out, can I actually get there, and get home safely?

I’ve run through exactly how I go from “never heard of Formby beach” to standing here, on the dunes.

I am learning too, so if you have anything tips for train accessible solo hikes I haven’t mentioned. Leave them in the comments.
