ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:
Matt Peers @mattjpeers

Today we’re featuring Birmingham-based photographer Matt Peers, who enjoys what he believes to be a game of chance that makes up street portraiture.

Q: We’re big fans of your portraits - where do you find your subjects and what draws them to you in the first place?

A: Thank you, you’re very kind. I’m lucky in the fact that I can find subjects in most places. It can be hard to pin down what draws me towards some and not others. Sometimes it can be the person has a particularly striking attribute such as hairstyle, eye colour or what they are wearing. Then you have to factor in that what should be a winner isn’t, and a 50/50 chance turns out to be the best of the lot. Something mercurial happens between subject , capture and development you can’t control and it keeps me coming back for more.

Q: Is there a recurring theme you find yourself returning to?

A: To paraphrase Shakespeare, all the world’s a stage and we are just players passing through. All my projects have the same underlying theme, which has a location as the fulcrum connecting the various characters I capture.

Q: How do you balance artistic intention and spontaneity in your work?

A: The intention is the narrative framework I put around a project which then allows me to add the images if I feel they fit. The great thing about street portraiture is you don’t know who you will meet around the next corner.

Q: What feeling do you hope people have when they see your work?

A: Like any creative person you want to be understood and create a form of connection. For the viewer to have the human condition reflected back at them and for it to create some form of meaning.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:
Missy Prince @misssyprince

Today we’re exploring an artist from the American Midwest who masterfully balances joy, humour, desolation and neglect in real-world settings and people.

Q: Where do you usually find inspiration for your images?

A: Anywhere I can. Film, Literature, everyday experience. It’s not always easy to find. I think interest is more available and maybe more important than inspiration. Inspiration is preliminary. Curiosity, desire, and obsession are the real productive forces.

Q: Is there a recurring theme you find yourself returning to?

A: Place is an inescapable theme for me. I don’t know how to think outside of it. Even my portraits are environmental. My images are visceral points on a map.

Q: How do you balance artistic intention and spontaneity in your work?

A: By staying as open as I can to possibility. I don’t start out with a solid plan. I want to be surprised. Like a street photographer I’m collaborating with chance. Intuition tells me what to do. The space between the photos you hope to get and the photos the camera gives you carries some good energy. Hope, doubt, uncertainty, faith, suspense. I try to hold on loosely.

Q: What feeling do you hope people have when they see your work?

A: I hope they feel the raw pleasure of seeing, a bit of wonder, and maybe a poetic stir.

Q: Have you got any upcoming projects?

A: My lifelong project, if you want to talk about projects, is to stay on the productive and creative side of [the] line between stereotype and insight.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT : @annesophie_landou 📸
This week, we catch up with Anne-Sophie Landou, a photographer based in Marseille, France. Through her work, she explores imagery shaped by intuition, emotion, and a strong visual universe.
⬇️ Discover her thoughts on inspiration, process, and the role of emotion in photography.
Q: What’s your name and where are you from?
A: My name is Anne-Sophie Landou. I’m a 36-year-old photographer based in Marseille, France. I was born in Toulon and I have Corsican roots.

Q: Where do you usually find inspiration for your images?
A: My work is mainly inspired by art and pop culture, paintings, drawings, children’s books, movies as well as people and nature.

Q: Where do you find the balance between artistic intention and spontaneity in your work?
A: Shooting is a very intuitive and cathartic process for me, so spontaneity definitely prevails. Even though I make conscious choices like selecting a specific camera, medium, or working in black and white versus color, the act of photographing remains instinctive.

Q: What feelings do you hope people experience when they see your work?
A: I hope I don’t bore people, I want to entertain them. Maybe they’ll feel like they’re looking at something new: something pop, colorful, sometimes almost cartoony. More importantly, I hope my photographs provoke emotion beyond the simple fact that they are images
