Visited a new candle shop in town, @candlewitchcompany. Picked up the book Royal Witches and a “Shire” scented candle. If you’re in the Quad Cities, it’s worth a visit!

What a thrilling read this was!

The Void is a massive chasm stretching miles beneath the Earth's surface. Hidden within it is a lost city that could contain untold treasures and technology capable of helping civilization above. But the deeper you go, the more dangerous it becomes, mutated creatures and terrifying plant life lurk around seemingly every corner.

Petra and her best friend, Jade, are divers who take tourists into the Void to catch a glimpse of this strange world below. Their ultimate goal is to earn enough money to open a clinic on the surface. When they're given one final opportunity to make enough money to turn that dream into reality, they take the dive. What could possibly go wrong?

Apparently, pretty much everything.

Tatiana Schlote-Bonne (@thebuffwriter) creates some truly terrifying imagery throughout this book. The monsters lurking beneath the surface are nightmare fuel, but it's the claustrophobic, cave-like environment that really got to me. Add in moments of grief and some genuinely tense sequences, and I was hooked from beginning to end.

I tore through this book because I needed to know if Petra and Jade were going to accomplish their mission. There was never a point where I felt bored or like the story was dragging, and every time I thought things couldn't get worse, the Void seemed to have another surprise waiting.
And don't let the YA label turn you off from this one! There's plenty here for adult horror readers to sink their teeth into as well.

If you're looking for a fast-paced, claustrophobic horror adventure with terrifying creatures, an intriguing world, and plenty of tension, What Feeds Below is definitely one to put on your radar.

September has come and September has gone! This month had a really fun month of reads.

I wrapped up @veschwab 'Villains' trilogy. I thought 'Vengeful' was fun, but Schwab's conclusion to the trilogy 'Victorious' was a blast from start to finish. It just NARROWLY missed being by book of the month for September!

Speaking of my book of the month, that goes to @john_ward_horror's A Blackened Heart, A Blackened Soul. This had its own dedicated review a few posts ago, but in short, if you're looking for a great read that really brings the spooky this October, this is the one!

I knocked out a King heavyweight in Pet Sematary. There was a lot about this book I liked, I think my expectations might have been a little too high going into it, however. The scares just didn't quite work for me.

I wrapped up Incidents Around the House this morning to prep for Other Mommy. I thought this was another effective horror novel told through the perspective of the child. Note: I tried doing the audiobook for an immersive read, and I just couldn't do the high pitched voice.

I Know a Place was my first @catnassidy read - not all of these stories connected well with me. That being said, I'm excited to read some of his full length novels because I did quite enjoy his writing style overall.

Lastly, What Feeds Below by @thebuffwriter. This is another one that has a dedicated review on my page, but this one is SO MUCH FUN. Don't let the YA tag hold you back from this one - there are a lot of great horror elements and a great atmosphere!

What was your favorite book from September? How's your TBR looking for October?

The “trad wife” trope seems to be popping up more and more in new releases, and Trad Wife is a fantastic example of what can be done with it in horror.

I found Jenny Kaplan to be an incredibly relatable protagonist. I understood the thought process behind her decisions throughout the novel, even when those decisions had me screaming internally, “Jenny, WHY?!” Her assignment to write an article about trad wife social media influencer Mia Wright leads her to Black Swan Farm, and, as Jenny suspects, things aren't quite what they seem. The more time she spends there, the more questions begin to surface: what exactly is going on at Black Swan Farm, and is there something much darker lurking beneath the surface?

Sarah Langan (@sarahlangan) does an excellent job creating an immersive, creepy atmosphere within Black Swan Farm. The setting itself becomes a character, with an ever-present sense that something is wrong. There was one particular scene that genuinely made me squirm, which is not something that happens often while I'm reading horror.

I also really enjoyed the lore surrounding Black Swan Farm and the nearby town. The history and secrets were slowly revealed in a way that kept me curious and made me want to keep digging deeper into the mystery.

Overall, Trad Wife was an engaging, unsettling read that combines a timely premise with some genuinely creepy horror. I'd definitely recommend it to other horror readers, especially those who enjoy stories where the surface hides something much darker.

Keith Rosson continues to prove why he's one of horror's most compelling voices. Crone follows Eli, a disgraced ex-detective turned addict who works for the biker gang supplying the drugs he's addicted to, all while desperately searching for answers about his daughter's disappearance 13 years earlier.

Rosson delivers a brutal, unsettling story that constantly makes you wonder just how much darker things can get. The witchcraft elements add a unique supernatural twist, creating some genuinely chilling imagery that lingers long after the final page.

Fans of Keith Rosson's previous work will feel right at home here. If you're drawn to stories of revenge, grief, and supernatural horror with a gritty edge, Crone is well worth picking up.

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House for providing the ARC.

🔥 RECENT PICKUPS 🔥

Last month I read Trad Wife by Schaefer and LOVED it! I couldn’t pass up her new release, A Thousand Monstrous Forms.

A series I absolutely loved growing up was A Series of Unfortunate Events. When I saw The Bad Beginning had a deluxe edition, I had to pull the trigger. My son is also close to the same age I was when I read it - bonus points when he reads it!

Lastly, The Macabre by Kosoko Jackson. I’ll be honest, I am judging the book by the cover HARD and loving it! I really know nothing else about this book 😂

A Blackened Heart, A Blackened Soul by @john_ward_horror is a book I kept seeing pop up on various sites as a genuinely scary read, so naturally, I had to find out for myself. It absolutely delivered.

One of my favorite things about this book is its structure. The story is split into two halves: the first follows the main character as an 8 year old child, while the second picks up 25 years later. Throughout both parts, the story is told from three different perspectives, which I thought worked incredibly well. Getting inside the characters' heads as they experience these events added a lot of depth and made their individual perspectives really stand out.

I also loved the little pop culture references sprinkled throughout the book - there's even a Goosebumps reference, which immediately earned some bonus points from me. And then there's the ghost hunting aspect in Part 2, which was right up my alley. If there's two things I love, it's a haunted house story and a good ghost-hunting TV show. Give me a group of people investigating a supposedly haunted location while I sit safely on my couch? I'm in.

This was an easy, quick read, but don't mistake that for a lack of impact. Ward manages to make this story super effective, delivering some genuinely creepy moments without needing to drag things out.

As always, check the trigger warnings before diving in, but if you're looking for something to kick off your spooky season reading, this is an easy recommendation from me.

Thank you to NetGalley, @pfracassi, and @shortwavebooks for the ARC.

This was a new experience for me, I don't think I've ever read a short story collection, and I've also never read Philip Fracassi's horror (though I did read his take on Sci-Fi in The Third Rule of Time Travel).

And I LOVED this book.

Some of these stories were genuinely creepy. Others left me wishing I could spend more time in the worlds Fracassi created. Every tale makes the most of the time it has, delivering a punch without feeling like it needed to be longer. Some of the stories are downright fun, while others are genuinely unsettling and scary.

What I enjoyed most was how much variety there is throughout the collection. Each story has its own flavor, but they all showcase Fracassi's ability to build an atmosphere, pull you in quickly, and leave you with something to think about - or, occasionally, something to be afraid of.

I think this is a perfect entry point into Fracassi's body of work. If you've never read him before, Traps and Specters gives you a fantastic introduction to his style and just how much he can accomplish in a short amount of time.

Highly recommended for horror readers, especially anyone who enjoys short fiction that packs a punch.

✨AUGUST READS✨

WHAT A MONTH! All but ONE book ended with a 4.0 or better! This unexpectedly turned into the month of the Trad Wife, having read 3 books with that trope. Earning the top spot for that specifically was Yesteryear, a divisive novel that really worked well for me. With all 3 of these novels, check triggers warnings before diving in.

My TOP READ of the month goes to Philip Fracassi’s collection of short stories, Traps and Specters. I thought every story in the collection was highly effective - more to come as we get closer and to the release date!

Special shoutout to Slewfoot by Brom. The story itself was great, but the art added another amazing layer. I think I’ve purchased 3 more by Brom since reading it!
