EVENING IN THE GARDEN | 08.20.26 — 6:41 PM The other evening, I walked next door to see my neighbor. He was already in the garden, moving slowly through the rows, picking purple hull peas. The sun was beginning to fall, casting that soft evening light across everything. We talked for a while about the garden, the weather, and life. Then we just kept picking. One at a time, he reached beneath the leaves, never in a hurry. Every so often, he would pause, lean in closer, and find another pod hiding where he had already looked. For a while, neither of us said much. We just worked our way down the row, dropping peas into the basket and listening to the small sounds of the evening settling in around us. When the basket was full, he stood up slowly and looked over the garden. “It’s been a good year,” he said. And standing there beside him, I realized he wasn’t only talking about the peas. Months earlier, he had watched the weather carefully, waiting for the last frost to pass before planting those little seeds. He knew the timing mattered. Plant too early, and the cold could ruin everything; wait too long, and the season might slip away. So he had to be present and chose the right moment to plant when the ground was ready. Since then, he had watered, weeded, waited, and trusted that something would come of it, even on the days when there was nothing to see. Life is like that. Growth happens quietly. It happens when we choose to go the extra mile, make sacrifices, show up when it would be easier not to, and keep tending to the people and things that matter. Most of it goes unnoticed while we’re living it, but over time, those small choices take root. Years pass, and those little moments become something bigger than we ever realized. Then one day, you look around and understand that the life you’ve built isn’t only made of accomplishments or plans. It’s made of the people you chose to show up for, the sacrifices you were willing to make, and the relationships you allowed to grow alongside you. Maybe that’s what makes a year, and a life, a good one. by @lathanbuckley
