One Friday evening at @latitudechi, I found myself sitting on a couch, next to a dog named Bob Ross. An oversized flat file cabinet had been transformed into a colorful makeshift stage covered with a spread of items: keyboards, a Y2K iBook laptop, a Barbie doll sitting cross-legged on an inflatable chair, a theremin, and even a Nintendo DS.

What I didn’t know was that soon, I would be soothed by these items, all as sonic devices. At Emotional Tech Support, Soft Reset (duo @zsvn and @claravenice) lulled viewers into their highest selves through a Love Island-themed soundbath and meditation, followed by a tech customization workshop.

At the link in our bio, Bri Robinson (@niq.uor) speaks with Zsofi Valyi-Nagy of Soft Reset about what is possible when access, playfulness, performance, technology, and the sensory intersect.

As summer is wrapping up, our AIR Archive Fellowship concludes! Lizeth and Dylan have worked hard to sort through and index all of the donations from Artist in Residence of Latitudes past. This year we welcomed our 100th resident, so you can imagine what a task this was! We asked Lizeth and Dylan to reflect on their time digging through the collection and wanted to share a piece of their responses with you all.✨

Was there a piece in the archive that left you feeling inspired?

Dylan: We have two pieces of Jordan Martins’ “Phenotypes” (AIR November/December 2022), which are “an ongoing series of archival pigment prints stemming from a process of scanner-based collaging.” Since each collage is printed as a single unique edition, it feels like an honor to be able to preserve these artworks in the collection. The way that Martins combines painting, photography, and digital abstraction, using the scanning bed as a blank canvas makes these pieces super intriguing, and after researching his other projects, it feels special to preserve these works that served as starting points for future pieces.

Lizeth: Yes, multiple pieces, one being a photograph by Samantha Cabrera Friend featuring
two women with their young daughters wrapped close to their chest with a pink rebozo, shawl. This print stood out to me because of the warm feeling and themes of motherhood and protection. For weeks me and Dylan could not find who the print belonged to until we went through the list of past AIR websites we stumbled upon the artist. While looking through Cabrera’s work I saw her project “Woman of Guadalupe” and instantly recognized the location from when I visited the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, Mexico.

This fellowship was made possible thanks to funding from Illinois Arts Council @illinoisartscouncil by @latitudechi

ANALOG BIRDING FILM COURSE

When:
October 10th 1:00pm to 3:30pm
October 17th 9:00am to 11:30am
October 24th 1:00pm to 3:30pm

Where:
LATITUDE Chicago (1st and 3rd week)
Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary (2nd week)

Instructors: Tyler Snell & Matt Igleski

Want to learn about film photography? Want to learn about birds? In partnership with Chicago Bird Alliance, participants will learn how to use analog photography as a tool to slow down, reflect, and learn about birds, their habitat, and birding in Chicago. No experience with birding or photography is necessary.

After an introduction to birding and the fundamentals of photography, covering basic camera use and fully manual exposure settings with a focus on photographing birds and their habitat in the first session, we’ll visit Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary for the second session. Each participant will receive one roll of color film for the trip, which LATITUDE will then develop and make 4x6 prints of. In the third session, we’ll look through the prints together and discuss the experience and what the photographs can teach us.

Participants should ideally have a fully functioning 35mm film camera and lens with the ability for fully manual settings (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO). We do not have cameras to loan out, but if you don’t have a camera and would still like to join, or have any questions about if your camera will work, please reach out and let us know before registering. No specialized wildlife gear is required; the workshop is focused on photography as a means of being present and learning.

The workshop fee includes a donation to Chicago Bird Alliance, one 36 exposure roll of 35mm color film, film processing, small enhanced Minilab scanning, and 4x6 prints of the full roll.

Introducing our August 2026 AIR Kayla Reefer! Kayla has been experimenting with fabric printing and preparing prints that she will show in our gallery space in January. We are excited to see more of Kayla’s work and hand crafted frames in the show. 🔗 You can read more about Kayla’s practice from our interview using the link in our bio!

Kayla Reefer is an Afro-Panamanian American multi-disciplinary artist based in Chicago, Illinois. Her still imagery primarily nests in the genres of portraiture and documentation through which she explores the varying nuances of identity, intimacy, and community. Remaining true to the essentials of her work, she solely focuses on communicating stories in their purest form. Her work is characterized by her ability to photograph individuals with profound sincerity and sensitivity. Reefer’s visual art practice has allowed her to pose questions, imagine possibilities, and brainstorm solutions concerning the erasure of people whose identities mirror her own.

As a photographer, Reefer’s commissioned work has spanned across the genres of photojournalism, music and entertainment, editorial, and commercial campaigns. Throughout her 10 year career, her images have been featured in publications such as TIME, The New York Times, The FADER, Vice, and Vogue, along with campaigns for Apple, Spotify, and Airbnb. Her work as a DP/cinematographer for experimental short film UNDER BONE (2017), has been selected for film programs and festivals including Toronto Short Film Festival, BlackStar Film Festival, Outfest Fusion LGBT People of Color Film Festival and more. taken in LATITUDE by @latitudechi
