A may recap of sorts because if I do it properly we'll be staying here forever.

So I've been obviously obsessed with "Right place, wrong person".
I've also read quite a lot of nonfiction, the most in a year if I'm not wrong and I've put my favourite three in the slides "hijab butch blues", "ace", and "Hood feminism".
Life has been going and not at the same time, I've dropped things I've been obsessively doing suddenly (reading) and picked up things I haven't done in a long while.
Honestly its been a bit much but I've been feeling creative so (no promises) I might be here a bit <3

How has your may been? I hope however it was that June would be better for all of us. I hope you're all taking care of yourselves enough to be able to continue advocating for those who don't have that privilege.

Honestly this has been an exhausting year already with all of my emotions being wrung out of my body on the daily so if any of you feel the same way, know that someone out here understands you. We can't really stop and give up but we can at least share each others pain. I really hope everyone who has been vocal stays that way and I hope inshallah for all of this to be over soon.

I was Honestly going to make the slide the only thing I mention in the post about this so that the spreadsheet gets pushed but I'm still struggling with posting like normal with everything that's going on.

In the shallows is a contemporary ya book about two girls getting a second chance at love. After certain circumstances that cause Nico to lose her memory, her and mara meet again and things start to unfold.

I honestly did not expect what the book ended up being when I picked it up. The characters were so cute. They had this little group of friends and Mara's family who were wholesome. Their interaction were really sweet at times.
Mara also had a VERY close friend and we all know how much I love platonic relationships.

What I appreciate the most was the ending because a lot of the books I've read where there is abuse or toxicity end it in a sunny forgiving live laugh love way but this book was more realistic with it. And wow the plot twist!!

- Read this if u enjoy ya contemporary romance with a second chance love!

I'm sincerely hoping those who read the book know which scene I'm trying to show. That scene was when I cried first reading the book and it still makes me sad :')

Arlo deserves a hug. Multiple hugs. Please make sure you read the tw list before reading the book!

If it was anywhere else in the world the number 10 ded babies would've caused a riot. But since its the mideast no number is high enough. We're made to sit here and witness this happing while men in their white collars and self h8ing women sit to .... debate... whether we deserve a riot like ppl from every other part of the world.

We have to sit and take it PEACEFULLY like perfect little docile victims, thousands of us unaliving the longer we wait for people who don't have even the littlest bit of humanity in them to decide whether WE are human enough.

Some are already having "activism fatigue" but what about the falastini people who've been doing this for 75 years. They've BEEN TIRED. EXHAUSTED. But still holding a fight. and you can't even hold on for more than a month? They're living off of a quarter cup of water every couple days (if) and half a loaf of bread every couple of days (if) and u can't live without ur pumpkin spice latte that ur privileged enough to find replacements for? They're using their books to light fire to keep warm and u can't stop buying books by authors who are supporting what's being done to them?! They can't sleep at night because of the constant sound of strikes but oh no :((( nestle has all of ur favourite sweets :(((

People are losing their limps as we speak but no the book community is worried about their freedom of speech. Speech being promoting authors who support gen-cide. Kids are losing every single member of their families but you guys are still debating whether u can separate the problematic art from the even more problematic author because, awe, u just CANNOT stop spending ur money :(...

Clearly life has always been cheap for u. "This books protagonist is so me! XD" Right... U disgust me.

I hope that everyone knows that no matter how many families r wiped off the register, at least one olive branch will always stand strong. And we will always remember. I hope u enjoy the iron taste of ur grande coffee.

Zayneb would never believe me if I told her that Americans of various backgrounds were chanting Allahu akbar in the streets. Yelling "bl ruh, bl damm", researching and reading about our history and specifically falasteen, picking up Quran translations?

I couldn't believe it at first. I had thought the 3 separate people reading the Quran were just isolated incidents until I saw their comments where hundreds were saying they also bought the translated edition and started reading it.

I saw videos upon videos of non muslim/non arab people who were discussing their internalised islamophobia and racism towards Arabs and what they were doing to dismantle that.

When I heard those chants and these videos my first thought was zayneb and her experience and this exact page in the book where she scares an islamophobic woman by simply writing God is greater and how happy she would be of this improvement because I relate to her so much.

I actually was happy at first. "People are finally seeing us as humans. They're realising that they've been indoctrinated and that what's happening to anyone in the middle East, especially in falasteen, isn't normal." That's what I was thinking.

But not anymore. I don't want to be a downer but it hurts deeper every time I see someone admit that they used to flinch when hearing Arabic and now they're trying to fix that. Because, why did it take so long? Why now?

I cannot be happy about finally being seen as a human being when the cost was the gen0cide of an entire people of my kind.

Are we not enough alive? Does there have to be such a huge tragedy for people to see us? An active attempt at gen0cide and broadcasting pain and suffering instead of having time to grieve?
Were our lives the cost of our humanity this whole time?

I guess I should be glad that at least it started happening but none of these people deserve cookie points. This was never okay and it never will be. People should not beg to be seen as human. by @lattefairies

I have been trying to talk about this "condemning resistance" phenomenon that has taken over what was supposed to be the most intellectual community but I know that a lot of people will start saying slurs. I've been thinking about it and I've decided I couldn't care less.

A lot of authors and influencers have been sharing these "I can be pro falasteen and also condemn ha ₩as because they unalived innocent civilians" WHERE?! I will not sympathise with those who stole HOMES and displaced people. I will not sympathise with those who walk the streets CHANTING de@/th to Arabs. I will not sympathise with those who willingly sleep tight and warm knowing fully well they have a house elsewhere and the people they displaced are forced to live in refu gee TENTS. I will not sympathise with the people who forcibly and secretly STERILISED the Ethiopian jewish women. I will not sympathise with the people who sat on top of mountains CHEERING everytime a b0mb hits a falasteeni house. I will not sympathise with "citizens" who are now carrying we@p0ns and have consciously unalived actual innocent civilians attending A FUNERAL. I will not sympathise with people who have been actively ethnically cleansing a whole country of my fellow Arabs. I will not sympathise with settlers.

And before anyone comes at me w antisem!tism, I'm against the settlers not the Je₩s because there are falasteeni Je₩s.

In the words of Mohamed Ashour:

"When YOU condemn 75 years of tyranny, illegal occupation, k1ll1ng of civilians, forced evictions and b0mbings of entire communities, then you will have earned the moral authority to ask that question (do you condemn h@/mas). I will not be asked or dictated to condemn anyone from someone who is supporting an actual tyrant according to international law for decades."

And let me remind you that none of you condemned any of that for the past 75 years.

As a arab person I will never forgive those of you who said this. I will never forgive those of you who have never said anything at all. And I will never forgive those of you who only PROPERLY joined this fight after a week.

These children will tell Allah everything.

Everything comes to an end :')

This trilogy is just Everything. No character relationships and interactions and bonds would ever compare to the ones in the broken earth trilogy. The immense love and attachment I have to this series is unmatchable.

Reviewing these books over and over won't do anything so I'll just talk about my feelings for a little. First off the amount of platonic love here fills me with so much joy. The exploration of generational trauma while also showing characters healing from it and characters Witnessing it starting first hand, is a special experience I've never encountered anywhere else, not to this degree.

We all know N. K. Jemisin is one of the greatest world builders out there but her characters!! Man they never fail to strike ur heart. Whether good or bad all these characters are just so important to me I can't even explain how. I could be hating a couple of them so bad but I'd be willing to protect them and defend them to the moon and back.

I think one of my favourite relationships in the history of books is hoa and essun's. There's so many to talk abt in this series but these two always take my breath away. The way they are attached on a close to spiritual level is one of the best things I've read. The way they care for each other and love each other and the way they would do anything to protect the other. Their extreme trust in one another too? It's just so pure and heartwarming and lovely and I just die thinking abt them. (Some of the quotes in the post are abt them too if ur interested. I love them 🫶🏼)

This is probably one of the few books discussing mother daughter relationships that ended in a way I approve of. It might not be that way for some people who would call me a pessimist for not liking how "poet x" or "when a brown girl flees" ended but it is what it is. I'm just a realist :]

I just wanna thank everyone I tagged and my sister for joining me in reading these books and indulging my intense desire to discuss them and gush about them with people. You guys are the best! I'm glad I got to do this with yall and I can't wait to do this again some other time in the future 😭💕

I am beyond doubt going to think about this book for a long time still.

So here's the gist:
If you want to see the difference between white feminism and actual feminism, I think it's shown well here.
If you want to see a great redemption arc (usual for a M. L. Wang.)
If you want to see a spookingly realistic portrayal of government indoctrination/racism/misogyny.
If you want to be angry or already are angry with the world.
If you want to read about female rage.
This is it. Blood over bright haven.

It's so much more than that though. The magic system is something I've never seen before (witch hat atelier is the closest but that's also super unique) it was so interesting to learn all about how it works.
The dark academia aspect was dark. Extremely. When u know what those people do in that university you will be baffled.
I loved how family was discussed here because you see two different types and they were amazing depictions.

For those who are interested in the romance in this book, it's there. It's kind of like star crossed lovers/academic partners/debate besties.

When I tell guys I've never fumed this much while reading a book. The anger that was coursing in me was insane. The author did such an amazing job with that (as usual) and the attachment I have to the main characters is immeasurable too.
I've also cried a bunch. (Again, as usual)

I want to recommend this to everybody 100%. not everyone will like it because it hits right on the nail and ik some people criticise books like these saying they r shoving it in their faces but it fits here because the mc needed things shoved in her face (as white feminists do) and the other characters also needed things shoved in their faces (they were entitled men) so 🤷🏻‍♀️

A fair warning: it'll get almost too close to be a white saviour story and then go a totally different direction. This IS M. L. Wang after all.

I feel like I didn't say enough but even after this long my thoughts about this are too deep and long so just Pls read it and come yell at me in rage and sadness while u do. Thank you 💕

-"Might. What a word. It holds infinite possibilities of a life that could have been. So many options stacked one on top of the other, like cards waiting for a player to pick and choose." - as long as the lemon trees grow - a new favourite book.

There's so much I wanna say that's hard to say so I'll just try my best. This book is just beautiful. The writing is beautiful, the characters and their struggles and their determination, the human emotion in every single page. All of it is phenomenal.

The author took history (that is still happening) and wrote a story of hope. I really wish every single person would pick it up because I know that it'll open a lot of people's eyes. It hurts that's right but it will leave you with more light in your heart than before.

-"Survivor's skin is a remorse we are cursed to wear forever."

One of the most relatable things that was discussed in this book that I haven't seen done as well in others is the survivals guilt. God that filled me with so much anguish. And khawf! (which if u liked the book thief and how it personalised death, you'll like this too). Every time something happened my brain would go on a tangent of fears and doubts and then khawf would show up and recite them back to me in the book and oh my god did that make me uncomfortable in the beginning. I also love the mental health aspects in this book because I know a lot of people don't want to acknowledge what living through these things does to you if you survive it.

God. Thinking about this book makes me want to cry even though I already cried A LOT while reading it. Just please go read it. Thank you 🥲

Longer review in goodreads and storygraph!

I finished this book in 2 days and as a slow reader this means I spent all waking minutes trying to know what happens next. I was in the pool thinking "it's not worth it I should get out and read" but my sister didn't let me. You'd think I'd be satisfied once I'm finished but I still kept thinking about it all week.... how am I supposed to wait for book 2 when the first isn't even out yet?

Let's start with the characters, just thinking about them makes me emotional ㅠㅠ zestian was everything I'd ever want from a female mc in a sci-fi book she really set the standard. she could be best friends with rin from tpw! it's cannon in my head.
Then we have my baby yizhi, this boy deserves the universe, exactly my type of unhinged cutie!
And then, siiiigh, I'm not sure if saying his name would be a spoiler so I won't say it but the other dude? AN ADORABLE CUTIE PIE! I want to put him in my pocket though I'd probably fit more in his irl lol.

I want to highlight a few discussions in this book that i loved! There's domestic abuse, child abuse, misogyny, racism, a lot of discussion about right and wrong, morality, compliance, how far you'd go for justice, prison systems, social hiarchy, the value of women (my personal favourite), familial abuse, and the role of media.

I know that seems to be a lot to fit in one book and still be handled correctly, but it was perfect. The premise of the book made it entirely possible and I'm glad the author went for it.

A bunch of random things I liked: the dystopian extravaganza, the sci-fi aspects of the mental realm and then the crysallysis and the way they can be transformed into different levels and how elements play a role in them, and the plot twist at the end (I saw it coming but I see everything coming all the time)

I cant go two seconds off here without having to come say stuff istg.

If any of you thought we hunt the flame is not middle Eastern rep, block me. Right now. I've seen the names, I've read passages where the culture and food are mentioned.

You people erased the European cultures because you kept calling them white and those WHITE IMMIGRANTS thrived because of it. (They're not American, Canadian or Australian, talk to the wall)

Do you realise how much power u gave the British and white immigrants when u lumped all of Europe with them? As if they didn't colonise some of the European countries too?? And now you want to do it to MY CULTURE?

We didn't survive so many attempts at colonisation and get labeled "developing countries" for you to now claim us. This doesn't just go for mid East but also the swana region in general.

My sisters have coloured eyes.... my GRANDPARENTS WHO ARE FROM IRAQ HAVE COLOURED EYES. my sister is pale, yall are just mad you don't own anything special, first stealing history and culture and now colonising features???

Leave us alone.

God I've been so excited to read these books (the only reason I haven't is cause they're out of stock everywhere) and you want to ruin them for me before I even order them, shut up. by @lattefairies
