poppop always asked me who i loved the most and the answer has always been, and will always be, him. below is a piece of his eulogy written by @tobreeread_

To many, he was Johnny, but to my sisters and I, he was Pop Pop. For his granddaughters, for those he loved, he’d give anything. We remember waking up on many summer mornings to the sound of his whistling in the backyard, the pool filter in the background, knowing we had a pop pop-filled day ahead of us. We’d leave every visit to his house with bellies aching of laughter and the smell of cigar smoke in our hair. We’d smilingly roll our eyes every time he handed us a sugar spoon, or ladle, instead of a normal one to eat our cereal. We knew with unshakable confidence that he’d be in the audience of every sporting event, recital, and graduation. He had stories to captivate a room, jokes that brought tear-streaming laughs, and love to stand the test of time. He passed away as he lived-surrounded by people who absolutely loved and adored him. He’ll live on in the hearts of all those he cared for, for in that caring he laid the groundwork for an unending legacy. We will feel him with us on every beautiful day, see him on every grocery line at the first sight of peppermint tic tacs, sense him in the smell of cigars, hear him in the passing whistle of a stranger. May he rest in peace, and may he greet us when our time here is done, with a cigar in his mouth and a smile on his face. He’ll always be the best of the best. by @laubutters

Buon anniversario amore mio 🖤
3 years ago today we eloped & promised forever in central park in front of our closest (american) friends and family. 1 year ago today we celebrated that promise again, surrounded by our amazing and supportive blended family. Pino mio, i’m grateful beyond measure for the love that we share & the life that we’ve built together. I will never take our marriage for granted and I will always put us first. You are my heart, my future, my family, my home. Cheers to many many more years of passion, silliness, cuddles, compromise, healthy communication, dates, laughing our asses off, home cooked meals, arguments ending with hugs, shared coffee in the morning, flights to sicily, and growing together to become the best versions of ourselves. to my incredible bridesmaids — thank you for standing by my side, not just on my wedding day, but through every moment leading up to it.
