Nell turns 5 today!! Five years into captivity and she's still none the wiser.

Duties include: emotional support, overnight supervision, reactivity consulting, board-and-train assistance for dogs whose problems she finds beneath her, and getting me through a stretch I'm now five years on the other side of. She's unaware of all of it. As far as she knows, her mom occasionally cries in the kitchen and then feels better & she assumes that's not her problem.

Areas for improvement: still won't be photographed with her sister which is a boundary they both enforce like their lives depend on it 😅 & she also still believes the mailman is enemy #1.

She taught us that difficult and bad aren't the same thing and that loyalty like hers cannot be understated. Many more life lessons to come! ❤️‍🔥🥳 by @lauraarayata

Something a lot of people don’t know about our household is that Nell & Kai haven't able to be in the same room for four years. After previous fights, the trauma and stress left us with no choice but to rotate and separate. It's taken an extreme mental toll on us, but their safety, happiness, and individual fulfillment always came first.

We finally found ourselves in the right mental and physical space to take a step forward with our trainers. Last night was Day 1.

To say there was tension at first is an understatement. You can see the stiffness in their body language in the beginning (and a little ungraceful slip off the retaining wall because training under stress is messy hehe).

But slowly, with the safety of muzzles and proper guidance, the stress has started to melt away. They spent 5 hours together yesterday, eventually adjusting, softening, and making more progress in a single afternoon than we have in the last four years combined.

We have a long road ahead, but for the first time in a long time, the doors are starting to open. ❤️‍🩹
